My recruiter Soojung from BOP Korea says that there was a missing document called addenda which serves as a sub-contract. and although she recommended that I send it asap that it will not interfere with my visa process. However, another recruiter from Korea Connections says that SMOE will not issue NOA unless all documents are received.which is true? If the latter is true, then there isn't enough time for me to wait for NOA and apply for E2 Visa and go to Korea in time for the orientation.

The same thing happened to me. I mailed in all of my documents thru FedEx except for the Addenda. My recruiter told me that she really needs the Addenda or else SMOE can't send out my NOA. The next day I took my addenda and had it FedExed to Korea. I would do the same if I were you. Don't wait any longer!

I'd love to see this SMOE 'addenda'.

At my POE's orientation, we were all given and told to sign a six-page addendum to the contract. Half the idiots started to sign it without reading it and I jumped up and said "Stop". In the end, nobody signed it and the Ks just 'gave up'.... we moved on to more important things like: Korea has four seasons and kimchie cures everything.

This 'addenda' sounds to me as though SMOE is going overboard in an attempt to control the foreigners... but they hold all the cards because you don't have a NOA... a visa, and aren't here yet. Laughing

Take comfort in the fact your principal will probably find your contract meaningless anyway... thus the addendum carries no weight (unless, of course, they want to use it against you).Rolling Eyes

Once again, Cruisemonkey I don't quite agree with you. The addenda is basically an ethics waiver. Personally, I found it demeaning. Yet, its perfectly justified. I'm assuming they've had problems with other foreign teachers. So the few bad apples spoiled it for the rest of us. This just comes with the territory and isn't something you can write off as a power trip.

Can you post it for us? What sort of ethics are we talking about? No soju after 9pm? No anma visits unless it is with your principal?

If you had any common sense you would know these things. But, once again apparently some people don't. So SMOE has to spell it out. I'm not too sure if I'm allowed to post it but, here are the topics covered:

1. Pay all bills on apartment in time, treat the property with respect, separate garbage.
2. Sexual harassment of any type will not tolerated (Physical, Verbal, and Non-Verbal)
3. Any type of Violence will not be tolerated (Physical, Verbal, and Disorderly Conduct)
4. Drug & Alcohol Policy.
A. Possession of alcohol at an SMOE School is Prohibited and excessive consumption of alcohol outside of SMOE that may harm the reputation of SMOE will not be tolerated.
5. Drug Policy - Possession, Distribution, and Use is not tolerated. 6
6. Weapons are not tolerated
7. Unauthorized Behavior - key duplication at apartments, changing the apartment lock. Any form of verbal profanity or untoward physical contact with students or colleagues is strictly prohibited.
8. Authenticity of documents. If you did not earn your degrees. You will be fired and deported.
9. Health check, you cannot withhold information if it will effect your ability to fulfill your 12 month contract.

I drank quite a bit of alcohol on campus, of course it was brought in by Korean teachers, so I guess it was ok.

Going out with the teachers, they were often harming my school's reputation by acting like normal Koreans (not that acting like a normal Korean is always a bad thing).

You can't make a spare copy of your key? You cannot change your lock so the principal or landlord can and will walk in without knocking anytime they please?

I can understand most of those, but the ones I highlighted are ridiculous.

now a better question is whether the same standards apply to the KOREAN teachers.... I admit to arguments with my coteacher, but she was the one who SLAPPED me... three times, no less....

but my story is old news.... anyone that wants to read it again, PM me though! Wink

long story short, if you assault a Korean, it's very, very bad.... if a Korean assaults you, don't worry about it....

winterfall,
Thanks for posting the addendum. Having not worked for SMOE, but rather for a private enterprise, I really didn't know what to expect it to say.

ABSOLUTELY! While few of the elements seem unreasonable at first glance, it certainly begs the question about mutual compliance.

Too often I read posts regarding slaps and other forms of physical aggression from Korean "colleagues" toward expats (or students), and also never forget (expat females especially) that one of Korea's biggest problems is sex-related crimes/assaults.

I think expats have every bit as much to fear as the Koreans do. We are the guests. FTs are taking the bigger risk and the greater leap of faith and trust.

I think the addenda does more than just spell out common sense things you'd expect an individual to abide by -- as far as legal documents go.

For example, in Accommodation - they have this clause
Quote:
Any activities that are disrespectful as a teacher are prohibited.

That is pretty much a catch-all.

There are a couple of other items that are fairly open and could likely be used against anybody who spends months working for a place.

Really? Care to show some links? I will take Rory's as one. Can you find any others?

oskinny1,

As usual, you expect me to satisfy you, personally. This is but one of four ESL websites I read and post on a regular basis. Not gonna engage in a series of thread searches in numerous forums for you. I KNOW what I've read in the past.

Then you're just being wimpy (roll over)... and, I would not waive my ethics for anyone - least of all a Korean employer. Wink

Fair enough. Just to sum it up. The ethics waiver is a code of professional conduct. They want you to act like a professional. Which is a reasonable request. After all, this is a job even if they don't take us seriously. Personally, I thought the bit on sexual harassment was insulting. I know what is up and down, thank you very much. But, still none of the requirements are unreasonable and are perfectly justified. Compared to jobs I've had in the past, this is lenient. Besides they won't nitpick unless you piss them off. Eg: You can do x. But, if you do y, then they're bust you for x and y.

I don't think the changing the locks is a ridiculous thing. You are being given that space by someone else. You don't own it. When you stay with your parents can you act like you "Own" the house? Of course not. Punch a hole in the wall. Will your parents get pissed? Of course, it's not yours.

No offense Oskinny. This is just splitting hairs. No matter what country your in. They will ALWAYS treat foreigners different. Even if they act like your nothing special. Your in a completely different legal category. A cop buddy was telling me about the huge stack of papers you need fill out whenever it involves a foreign national. Then you have to deal with their embassy.
