Do public schools (or the recruiters who hire for them) EVER pay the airfare up front for you??
I'm concerned about getting an awful job situation and not getting reimbursed or not getting reimbursed in a timely fashion.
Thanks!! |

Try this site:

Mouse over their Service tab then click on FAQ. #17 is about tickets and it says they pay for the flight.
I've used recruiters before in Korea long ago.
These guys at ESL Seoul have been good so far with me this time around. They say in their ad here at Dave's that they only recruit for the SMOE, EPIK and such programs.
They have been good about answering my emails and keeping me informed with what I needed to do and how soon.
I'm still not through the process with them yet, but it has been a fine experience so far. --- Especially compared to other recruiter experiences I had in the late 1990s... |

PSs used to buy tickets 'up front', but we're now in a transition period to 'flat rate' Entry, Exit and Renewal allowances. The last 'up front' airfares will be on August 31, 2009 for those renewing a 2008 contract.
That being said, a recruiter might lend you the money... after they weigh the odds in gamble for a W1,000,000 'pay out' against the odds of you screwing them. |

Actually I prefer SMOE's reimbursement policy. My flight only cost $550 USD, but I'm to be reimbursed 1.3 million won. The remainder goes straight to my pocket, which is fine by me.
Also, if I renew, I get 2 million won for a "round trip" to the states that I probably won't take. Again, I'd rather have the money than a forced 2 week vacation home. Not sure I'd want to fly for 30 hours during my 2 week renewal break. |

yes, a mere 2 weeks would suck. It took me a good 5 days just to feel right again and have my normal energy and sleep patterns back to a decent degree after that horrid flight which was mostly horrid because its take off/landing time meant I wouldn't be able to get any sleep on the plane.
I would suggest what I did - you have your normal vacation so just tack that on to your renewal vacation. I'm out for a month.
only a week or so at home though, visit the family, restock up on clothes and other items - then I went to Colombia.
of course, if you had/have to teach 3 weeks of camps + , then I feel for you. |

The recruiter I used for SMOE, a few years ago, paid for my flight upfront. Korean connections was the name of the agency.
All had to do was call and reserve with Korean Air. |

My EPIK contract finishes on Oct 10th. Yes, I know that's weird, but I started on Oct 10th and finish on Oct 10th.
Do you reckon they'll give me the 1.3m flight money as part of my severance/final month pay? (I hope so, because I, too, can get a flight home for way less) |

I think it's either 1.3 million and you say goodbye, or you come back and they give 2.0. |
