My SMOE school wants me to get a medical exam before the end of my contract. Of course I went through the exam upon arriving in Korea but my contract says nothing about an "exit" exam. I wouldn't mind a free physical... then again, my schedule is tight with just a little while left in the country.

Has anyone else been asked to do this?

I'm not with SMOE, so I couldn't say anything about what they do. But did they say why they wanted you to have one? I've NEVER heard about any exit exams.

If I had to guess, my two top guess are....

1) They are trying to figure out a reason to break your contract (but there seems easier ways to do this.....)

2) Another teacher/student/etc at the school has been diagnosed with something and they are quietly trying to find out where it came from or how far it's gone (not trying to scare you, just brain storming ideas....)

All the KTs for SMOE have to get medical checks once a year as required by the government... Probably confused and think that you have to do the same...

Just tell them you'll do it later, go home and never look back Razz

(Unless you're re-signing your contract with SMOE for another year, in which case you'll need your medical check done before they will sign off on your contract and visa sponsorship forms)

there's a regular civil servant exam (you are now a civil servant) and in Gyonggi it's every 2 years. I had to take it despite having taken my ARC medical several months prior.

then some schools may want one every year on top of that.
I was told to go get one. At the hospital the English speaking doctor told me looking at the form I was given that this was voluntary and asked me if I wanted to do it.

Since I did it immediately after camp, I couldn't start asking sharp questions of my co-teacher who told me to go but I'll hash this out when I get back. It may have been a "recommendation" which by now you should know in Korea means coming from the HIGH COMMAND, it's like a papal ruling ex-cathedra.

OP,

If you're not planning on re-signing and only have a little while left on your contract, just 'stall'... tell your co-teacher you'll do it then 'forget' about it. Chances are they will forget about it too. If they don't, with a modicum of creativity you should be able to find an excuse to be busy when they want you to go. If they force you into it, make sure they pay for it! Cool

I'm not renewing so my only concern is fulfilling my current contract. Since it says nothing about a second medical exam, I'm not too worried.

According to my co-teacher, the exam was requested in a letter sent by SMOE... but no one round these parts has heard of the letter. Who knows what the motivation is. To my school's credit, they are willing to pay for the exam.

In that case, it sounds like you can 'trade' an afternoon 'off' for a little blood. Wink

A couple of months ago, a list was posted on the wall in my school's staff room and 48 of 50 teachers rushed to see if their names were on it. I asked my co-teacher what was going on. She replied it was the list of teachers who had to get their (every 2nd year) medical exam. When I asked - why the intense interest... don't they know whether or not they had a medical last year? - the quizical expression on her face 'told' me she was confused by the logic... LOL.
