Just curious... Is a job official if you have signed one contract but have yet to receive the "official" contracts and NOA?
On the other hand, I know some people in the same situation who have already booked flights, but I am hesitant to do so until I know FOR SURE.
Is it possible that SMOE overbooked teachers this year and some of us will not receive NOAs?

I don't have any insider information or anything, but I would say that it definitely is possible. A few people on this board who were trying to do EPIK "passed" their interviews and felt somewhat secure, only to be rejected later. Granted, you signed a contract of some sort, but who knows exactly what that means to them.
I'd wait until you know your NOA is on it's way to you before buying a ticket, unless you can get one that is refunded easily. |

That's what happened to me. I went through my EPIK interview, passed, and had all my documents sent only to be told they over accepted too many applicants. I was then shifted to SMOE where I received a contract, signed it, and am now waiting for my NOA... which has not yet arrived... |

NOTHING is 'for sure' until you have a contract stamped (signed) by the Superintendent of your POE/MOE, your NOA... and your visa.
I don't want to be a fearmonger; however, if I were you, I wouldn't buy a ticket until I had the visa - there's always a (slim) chance the embassy/consulate will deny the visa. |

Yup, after sending in my contract and while waiting for my NOA, I got rejected by SMOE without any word or reason |

t1m1ty,
just out of curiousity, what were your qualifications, and were you with a recruiter, or did you apply directly? |

Sorry to hear that.
It scares me to think about people who: believe a recruiter; give notice at a present a job; spend the time and money to comply with the myriad of Immigration requirements; shell out approx. $1500 for a ticket (that may or may not be refundable... with penalties); and then find out they have no job to go to. |

| I have been told that my job is not secured until you get the NOA. The contract they sent us is like a placement tab for the position. It doesn't guarantee anything. |

That is correct -- and that is why people looking for ESL jobs in Korea should not fret a second about taking a 2nd job offer they receive after they have signed and mailed a contract to Korea...
...it is not unheard of for contracts to be terminated by schools before the teacher arrives in country.
There is no reason you should worry about taking a different job if a better one comes along ------ before you have processed the Visa for the first... |

Recruiter: "Hello Bob, thanks a ton for buying that plane ticker early like we asked. So glad you got hired and welcome to Seoul."
Bob: "Great! Where do I work?"
Recruiter: "Well, yeah about that,..."
Bob: "Yes?"
Recruiter: "Well, we dont really have anyplace for you to work. We didnt get a notice of placement for you."
Bob: "What?"
Recruiter: "Guess your not really hired then... Heh... heh. hehe?"
Bob: [insert series of explitives]
Self explanatory situation.
Dont even think about a plane ticket without a visa in your passport. If your one to throw money around then do it after you get visa confirmation |

Notice of Appointment I assume.
Tells you which school you work for. |

Not true--at least with SMOE. The Notice of Appointment that you receive from SMOE should not (unless by some stroke of luck) list what grade you will teach or what school you will be teaching at. You can only dream about where the school will potentially place you--SMOE essentially withholds everything until the last day of Orientation. According to a post, the Orientation Director Jon Park said that it was to mitigate the complaining they will undoubtedly receive about some assignments. I think it's completely smart and logical on their end, but it's not so great for the teachers. Actually to amend the above, you can figure out what grade segment (elementary, middle, high school, etc) you will be teaching on the first day of Orientation via your nametag.
The Notice of Appointment is a necessary document to apply for the teaching visa (E-2). Why it's so imperative is because it's the most official--and really the only official--document you can receive that secures your enrollment in SMOE. Figuratively speaking, think of it as SMOE's final signature on the dotted line.
The contract/addendum you receive does not guarantee your place. It is essentially considered as just another one of the many documents you have to submit after the phone interview. SMOE reserves the right to deny your application upon reviewing all the final documents; thus, again, sending the contract really holds no bearing. |

Just out of curiousity, what is the "point of no return" on the teachers side? Especially for the new teachers? Is it when the NOA/VCN is processed or when you actually go and get the visa in your passport?
I was wondering because some people are getting shafted this year, and some people just are getting bad feelings about their jobs? Does SMOE/EPIC do this every year, just overbook? What are the chances in two months some of those people rejected will get an email saying "Good news, a position has just been opened up for you!" or do these people have to reapply?
Just curious.... |

Notice of Appointment, that's for the public schools I think
You also have the Confirmation of Visa Issuance (aka, Visa Issuance Number) for the private schools
You only get one or the other, so don't freak out if you are reading all these posts about NOA's and you are going to work at a hagwon
like I did once, hehehe |
