Say what you will about them, but this is pretty messed up.

Quote:

Apple attempted to silence a father and daughter with a gagging order after the childs iPod music player exploded and the family sought a refund from the company.

The Times has learnt that the company would offer the family a full refund only if they were willing to sign a settlement form. The proposed agreement left them open to legal action if they ever disclosed the terms of the settlement.

The case echoes previous circumstances in which Apple attempted to hush up incidents when its devices overheated....

Read that, don't know what to think about it. They say it's from faulty batteries, and that it happened after they already dropped it. So it's not like it just started to explode by itself, still crazy though.

But that's just corporate tactics, I don't think other companies would handle it much differently. What are they expected to do?

They're expected to come out and say that there may be a safety issue with their batteries.

This isn't like some minor glitchy thing where something doesn't work like it should. Batteries are exploding!! It's a serious safety matter!

Well considering there are millions of iPods bought every day if it IS a serious problem there should be a massive flood of people with exploding iPods. Until then, it's a freak accident.

Um, so Apple makes these batteries?
How is this different from any other company that's tried such tactics?
Ford, General Electric, and Sony have all done much worse in situations where people lost limbs and lives, and there would be more if I actually tried to find out.

Yeah...Boo Apple!

Really man...they have to stand behind their products. If they buy batteries from some crappy company on the cheap, that then becomes their problem. They are free to turn around and sue who they want in turn, but they are responsible for the iPhone.

Cars blow up, people sue, companies pay. This is the way it goes.

Apple make the iPhone. It blows up if dropped. They replace the product, but also insist that a gag order be signed, and tried to hide even that fact. No other compensation, just replace the product, if and only if, you keep quiet about it. They will be sued. They will pay.

Now, untwist your knickers and face the situation. Nobody is slaying the great Apple here, just wondering why their #1 product tends to catch fire or explode.

AFAIK, there are more reports of this; this one, they decided not to sign on, and thus can legally speak about it. A GAG order imposes.....? Right. Silence. Thus, you probably wouldn't read about it now, would you?

Rolling Eyes

Even if it were an isolated case, in the ever-litigious and fearful US, the threat alone is enough.

Oh geez, here we go... don't worry my knickers are neatly pressed, and I'm not nearly as defensive about this as you think I am. Perception is everything i guess.

The batteries are not some backstreet knockoff, they are made by Sony as far as I can remember. Batteries in other products have exploded also.
Apple is not alone in the gag order business, and that was the point of my comment, especially considering the culprit component has not been proven to be Apple's fault.
Why would you as a business want to admit fault when it hasn't been proven?
