Since I've been posting here,--about two months--I've noticed some distrubing things. I've had to take down the guestbook on my blog. I have to moderate the comments. Some of the people keep leaving disturbring stuff--the stuff made of nightmares. Links to poop porn. Satanic stuff. And that sucks cause my blog is for my family and friends.
I get harassed by the likes of Snake Doctor and Forward Observer who keep calling me Otis or Kyle or Brad. They never leave me be. All the time with the pin pricks. I don't know these people. Can they give me a break?
Does this place cater to the disturbed?

Yes. We do stewed rubbish Monday to Friday, with a healthy helping of roasted meatballs on the weekend. Thank you for having us.
*Menu may change without notice. All items subject to availability of hot little waitresses. |

All jokes aside. If this joint looks at immorality as being cool, then why bother posting? Don't get me wrong. The place has it's charms. But so does a barber shop--if you get my meaning. |

The maturity of some on here does leave something to be desired I've noticed. The downside of the anonymous internet, people can be idiots all they want! |

This forum has always been incredibly immature and stupid. It is what it is.
It is an accurate reflection of the vibe in the foreigner community of Korea I would say. |

I thought so too. Every post A smith makes is quite trollish. I would expect to get hate mail if I wrote all the crap that you write.
Your concept of the stereotypical teacher was total flame bait.
I just hope that you talk differently than you write. Or have lots of health insurance. People like that don't tend to last long in Korea. Go to a bar and say half the stuff you say here and you will be asking for pain.
However, to directly answer your question. I have never been on any teaching blog site that is all that friendly or nice. Every single expat is always trying to one up the next guy/girl. There are some other sites that I post on that people do nothing but help and guide each other, but teaching and expat sites have too many egos.
I stopped doing dave's for over 4 years, but I have a lot of free time right now and enjoy the chaos.
Stop posting and reading on dave's. I would say that the majority of teachers in Korea don't. My estimate is less than 5% actually post on Daves and perhaps 10-15% read it. |

Not everyone here is an ESL teacher and this place doesn't reflect even a fraction of the expat ESL community.
This place is what it is- an anonymous newsgroup message forum where people could disguise themselves and take on any persona they want- if they want to be douches, they're douches, if they want to be apologists, bashers, etc., they can be.
People make it anything they want to make it. If they think it is too much for them to handle, why stick around?
Actually, I find the board incredibly tame compared to the way was. It used to be that the Korea bashers reigned supreme on the board. I am not sure what changed it, but alot of the interesting posters have either left Korea or were simply kicked off the board for violating the ToS, which I can see is strictly enforced. |

I don't really care much about conversation on Dave's - but I do find the forum to be useful for information. On many occasions, I've discovered restaurants, foreign shops, and lots of other stuff through threads on Dave's. That alone makes it well worth a quick glance once or twice a day. |
