I think a lot of it has deteriorated to the point that it is impossible and/or off-limits to do so.

I went to Beijing and saw the Wall at Simatai in October. From what I understand, quite a lot of it is crumbling or closed because it's unsafe.
I know you can hike sections though. I hear the hike from Jianshanling to Simatai is quite nice. |

I did that walk from Jianshanling to Simatai last summer, took us about 4 hrs for 10km (I wasn't/am not in great condition though). Really nice though!
And it's true, some parts are really just gone, don't expect a continuous wall! |

Anything is possible, but I would expect it would be pretty dull and boring for the most part as well food finding could be extremely difficult.
I went there for a half-day, and that was just about enough. |

The scenery can be very breathtaking, but you won't be able to manage to walk for months at a time along the wall. A few hours...maybe even a few days...but then you'll have a wide stretch of nothing to cross before you find wall again. |

There was a section in the Lonely Planet entitled "Walking the Great Wall" by someone who claimed to have done the entire length of the main wall. There is probably a link to a website there but I no longer have the book. Perhaps someone else could post it. I would recommend signing up at lonelyplanet.com's thorn tree forums and asking your question. That site is a wealth of information for questions exactly like yours. |

The GWOC is in a bad state of repair partly due to the Japanese bombing it during the war....they havent got round to fixing it yet and the local farmers have carried alot of it away for pig pens. |

I walked the Great Wall between Jianshanling and Simitai in summer 2002.
The 10km took around 3 1/2 hours at a modest pace.
I wouldnt say that it was "quite nice".i would be more inclines to say it was absolutely breathtaking. How good it was to be stood on such a fantastic piece of work.
Certainly one of the best days of my life.

thank you all for the advice, one thing though, tiger you said that you think it would be a bit boring to walk the entire wall, most probably so, but imagine how it would feel at the end (providing you got there) and the fact that you could actually say " i walked the GWOC", yes i imagine it would out and out suck at times, but that is why people do stuff like that, to push themselves and test there mettle.
for me travelling over here and teaching isnt quite what i expected, there's no REAL challenge in it, korea is such an easy country for expats to live in and everything is done for you, im planning on staying for a second year and really saving up some cash, hopefully enough so as i can do something that will really test me and still go home with a bit of money.
P.S i turn 30 in june so i guess thats what this is probably all about aye? |
