The biggest dissapointment is that foreigners are complicit in the whole thing by appearing on these stupid shows and talking or acting in a way that demeans themselves or other foreigners. |

My girlfriend tells me that what the patriarchy is trying to do is backfiring massively. It just makes foreign men more like forbidden fruit and as Korean women become more empowered they will want to date foreign men as a "screw you" type gesture. It is the same thing with women and smoking in Seoul. Even though it is frowned upon many younger women are doing it and it sends a clear message. Mauahahah |

disappointment implies you expected something different. I don't know but I don't think it is difficult to find 20 young girls who would talk trash and dress up for a little cash and fame. |

It is about facing the reality. There is nothing you can do to change thousands of years of Korean culture. You might have an impact on close friends but that is all you can expect. I hate to break it to you but you're not going to start a cultural revolution in Korea. |

I want and try to like Korea. I am a fairly positive person, but not an apologist. I have lived all over Asia and have been in Asia for 24 years now.
That being said, once in awhile things take me back. Recently, I was on holiday in Thailand and they had a KBS World channel and the cable in my hotel. Chit=chat with beautiful women was on and was sub-titled. Out of curiosity I watched ir. The commentator asked a series of loaded questions:
What do you think of foreigners who do not learn Korean?
Tell is about some embarrassing things you have seen foreigners do?
Each question was to find demeaning examples of foreigners, especially foreign men.
These girls proceeded to give their examples and opinions, all of which painted foreigners in Korea in a very negative light.
They also took every opportunity to speak of how sparkling Korea is. many had Korean boyfriends.
I have never heard of a country that had a show whose obvious intention is to demean the foreigners in their country.
How can Korea be serious about improving their image abroad when they send the message that this show sends?
I can't imagine this type of show being aired in any Western country, it would be banned.
The apparent fact that it is aired shows how out of touch the media is with the rest of the civilized world.
Sure, there are foreigners who do bad things. People do bad things. Even Koreans do bad things. Unfortunately, shows like this seem to paint all foreigners (especially men) with the same brush.
Personally, I do not like these girls! |
You just have to accept and ignore that you are living in quite possibly the most racist country on Earth.
The other night I was refused entry to a nightclub because of my ethnicity (they let a ton of Koreans in right in front of us.)
The majority of Koreans are racists; I think that is a balanced assessment. |

Exactly.
Refusing to acknowledge blatant stupidity when you see it, just because it's blatant stupidity "from another culture", is, in my *humble* opinion, condescending to that culture. Korea can do a lot better than this crap.
That having been said, it is TV. TV is stupid everywhere.
Since I started taking Korean classes, I can't count the number of times I've gotten the "Misuda!" comment.
I just say, "That show is trash. I'd rather die."
No one understands that response, and I don't bother to explain it. But at least I'm being honest. |

You couldn't get into a nightclub so the whole country is racist? haha..
wow. You gotta apply to get on that gag concert show. they're going to love you.

Okay, so tell us. What are you going to do?
What magical solutions are out there that would have a chance of affecting anything? |

Didn't say I could solve the problem. But I'll tell you what I'm not going to do -- I'm not going to go easier on Koreans than I would on people in my home country who are engaging in the same trashy behavior.
Like you said, for some people, Korea is a good fit. So far, I've adjusted extremely well here, which means I don't assume that every nasty encounter I have applies to the entire country. I have plenty of lovely Korean friends who remind me of that on a daily basis.
It also means I don't have to walk around excusing everything any Korean does in order to keep a balanced perspective. I'm able to recognize good where there's good and bad where there's bad, and I'm not afraid to speak up when I see bad. Because, in my opinion, it's cowardly.
When I lived in the States, I taught foreign university students. Some of the most enlightening conversations of my life took place discussing the issues those students had living as foreigners in the US. I think it's an extremely important dialogue to have (in a respectful manner and environment, of course) and actually has extremely high potential to change things.
You say you can *only* change the minds of a few close friends. But it's not about changing minds -- it's about opening eyes and starting conversations. And if enough of us can manage to be honest with Koreans about these things, eventually they will change, and Korea can become a better, stronger, more open and hospitable place to live. And that's good for everyone.
But go ahead and keep freaking out every time anyone says anything critical about Korea. I'm sure, in its own way, that's helpful as well..... |

Imagine if MartinLuther king had just shrugged and said
'Well it was originally a white person's country, you can't change their history etc...'
crossmr (mr cross) is either a doormat / masochist / aopologist or a troll as I once suspected when we got into a simmilar arguement a while back. And no - suspecting someone of being an apoltroll doesn't mean I'm copping out. It's just an observation. |

No. He's actually more offensive to Korea than those that make complaints.
Because although he can't see it (or he does and it's all part of his apoltroll persona) he's actually patronising Koreans. |

If only they spent commensurate time informing Corean men how maleficiently horrible kimchi and soju breath are, their audience would likely cease to wonder why there are ten western men with every Korean woman for every Korean male with a western woman, and they could quickly eliminate the resulting insecurities that make such programmes so popular. |
