Korea translate this one: Legalize da Ganja mon! Seriously, the country would be much, much better.

I have read that da Ganja used to be legal here until the 1970s. It used to be a big part of farming culture as well. Ever see the large smoking pipes? That wasn't tobacco in those pipes.

Note that this is replies to what foreigners think of Korea, it's not like they went to internet site and left bunch of comments about foreigners out of blue. Anyways, all I gotta say is, what comes around goes around.

Curse those filthy Americans and their terrible colony exploitation ways!

Those poor Germans, innocent of any wrong doing, subjugated by the horrible Americans for the sake of prosperity! And the poor Japanese, who would never hurt even a fly! They are yet another victim to the avaricious Americans!

Woe is we!

I think it's kind of funny. I take it that our ghost-translator didn't translate the neutral or generous posts regarding South Korea? As far as I can tell, those who replied to the translation were provoked and tricked into becoming outraged over nothing at all. Gotta feel a little sorry for them.

Are all FTs the miserable griping sots that Dave's is selectively presentd on that website, no. Are Koreans all the moronic gripe-a-tribes that that website shows, no.

I've had a fair number of Korean people admit that the Japanese colonization did some good for Korea. I've also had the typical 'Japanese- no good' responses. The people on that board need a serious chill pill or as someone else put it 'relax mon'.

Heck, I've ranted about the pro-pot crowd enough, but they kinda have a point when it comes to the colonic-retentive Koreaphiles.

Once again the Dave's Korea can do no good and the Korean 'Korea #1' crowd need to be sent out to sea.

What I see in those translated bits is a lot of ranting for the sake of ranting. It's a lot of hot steam filled with nationalistic nonsense that Koreans are so good at spouting. There's not a lot of thought behind those comments, so it's easy to pass them off. I don't get insulted by hot air.

We are fair game though, I have to admit. If you're going to go at a Korean, expect to get something back. I just wish they could come up with something better than that.

Actually, I've heard numerous Korean parents say that a year studying abroad is cheaper than 3 years of high school level private education in Korea, and also yields far better results.

Which koreans said this? Because they sure don't even know WTF they are talking about.

It's quite a common feeling among my adult students here in Korea.

Here's an interesting article on the topic.

I (and I'm sure most of they) don't know the exact costs involved in studying abroad. But when you realize the tremendous amount of money that is poured into private education in this country then I'm sure you will appreciate their sentiments.

I'm inclined to agree, actually, just based on the level of English I've seen out of various Koreans since I've been here, and living elsewhere in the world. But what it comes down to is not necessarily the level of education, so much as desire.

A lot of the kids thrown into hours upon hours of hagwon and private tutoring here simply don't have the desire to learn English. They can't understand how it benefits them, therefore, they don't make the effort. Of course, they're going to pick up some amount of English along the way no matter what. But when you live in a foreign country, particularly one like the US where they're so whatever about "You're in 'Merica -- you speak 'Merican!", suddenly you've got a lot more motivation to at least try. Plus, you have ample opportunities to actually *speak* English, versus just having it taught to you. Listening to native speakers all the time, yadda yadda.

Learning a language in an environment where that language is spoken is always going to be more effective. It's just common sense. That having been said, I know of Koreans who never went to hagwon, never had private tutors, didn't pay any attention in school, have never been abroad -- got to university and decided they wanted to know English, so took it up to teach themselves, and are relatively fluent after a couple of years.

To me, it ultimately comes down to the drive to learn. Money helps, but isn't the most important factor, one way or another.

Very true.
My one year of learning English in America was equal of 5 years of learning English in Korea. At least concerning of speaking, it's very true.

OK, so we're reading a translation of what a bunch of dummies thought about reading a translation of what another bunch of dummies thought about something they don't know too much about. Got it.

The internets is awesome.

also, Koreans take their internets WAAAY too seriously. But then again, so do a lot of people on this board.

You know, there's lots of good things on the internets too, like boobies and people falling down. Don't spend all your internets here.
