Ok folks so here's the story so far, I'm getting married to my boy in June, he being a GI, I believe will cause for alot of extra paperwork more than usual. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and what really needs to be done? Thanks so much...

Hi...

I too am marrying my G.I. We haven't even yet begun the paperwork, but I can offer you what my friend told me.

One morning her and her GI woke up and said "what do you want to do today" (one month into their relationship) and the other said jokingly "lets get married" ..... "are you serious" , "sure why not" and they did...that very afternoon. 3 years later they are still together.

It wasn't anything special, but the paperwork can't be that difficult to get. They went to city hall, with birth certificates and passports. Got a license...got married right there. Then the boy went on base, presented to paperwork somewhere and got her an ID card by the next day.

I think ur boy has to do most of the work, so get him on the hunt.

I'm Irish and hoping that the whole nationality thing is not going to be a problem. Some of his friends reckon I'm in it for the citizenship!!! Hardly as we don't intend on staying in the states when he gets outta the army, but as regards living in the US until he finishes well that means I will have to get citizenship one way or another. I'm wondering what documents I need....birth certs etc...but what else??

Hey,
I think that most of the time the US consulate recomends getting a 90 day green card for US access and then going to the states and getting married there. Getting married overseas can cause a lot more hassle as far as extra paper work goes. Good luck!

Hardly. I married a German girl (the marriage didn't last, but that's a whole other story), and her citizenship wouldn't have ever been an issue. As long as she was a dependent of mine she could go wherever I was stationed, live with me, and not have to become an American citizen. In fact, she kept her citizenship on purpose so we could live in either the EU or US when I got out. Like I said, that became a moot point when we divorced, but it's still true.

Didn't you say you were going to marry a rich guy and spend your days spending his money?

Just curious

wanted to and going to are two entirely different things.

also, he is high ranked and in a unique MOS.....which will allow for amazing job offers when he gets out in 7 years.

What is it with these G.I's stealing all the women? The uniform? personally i think people who join the army lack individuality and are after a free ride... and are happy to lose any power and self determination over their lives, and become a pawn to politics. But hey I guess all that enforced exercise would do wonders for the figure.

Define "high ranked". Is he a general, a colonel, a CSM even?

I'm assuming he's an enlisted guy since you've used the magic words "MOS" which the officer corps doesn't have. In other words, what E grade is he? I'm just curious, because I can see some E-4 or E-5 telling women that they're "high rank".
