What is the best route from Korea to South America in terms of cost and travel time? The most direct route would be ideal.

Who has done this trip before? Any recommendations for carriers and/or countries?

Cheers, BB

Korean Air strarted flights from Incheon to So Paulo-Guarulhos about 6 months back (via LA).

Would be an insanely long flight to go on, but probably the most direct.

(I can't imagine what Koreans would be doing in Brazil, but presumably if Korean Air is flying it, there must be some Korean demand for that service to exist).

A friend did this a year ago, the best price he got (not sure how much I'm afraid) was an Incheon-Toyko-Lima deal from unique travel.

I haven't checked into flying to South America; but, Xanadu in Itaewon has always been great at finding the cheap and direct flights to the various places I (and friends of mine) have visited.

Brazil has quite a largish Korean community living there....Sao Paulo I believe. Lot of Japanese live there too

noy if you aren't coming out of the arrivals area and through customs, but wouldn't most people be allowed to visit for a short period without one anyway ( i mean people here as teachers)

You have no choice. You must officially enter the United States even if you are connecting. You must ensure that you are in compliance with whatever visa laws are in place. Most nationalities would qualify for a visa exemption.

That is why its confusing. My wife is from the Philippines, but if we are connecting to a flight to Venezuela, getting a visa is a hassle for the US.

Unless something has changed recently, you do NOT need a visa for connecting flights. You are not legally entering the country, you are switching planes. You do not go through customs, collect your baggage, or go through immigration. You go to another gate in the airport.

Having stopover or long layover and leaving the airport is a different deal.

I'm American, too, so even if a visa was needed, I wouldn't need it.

That is not my understanding. Security in place for a while now necessitates entry in to the country. When was the last time you got off of an international flight in the states? There is no way around it. You must go through. My friends from other countries have done countless amounts of complaining to me about having to go through the hassles of getting a visa for a layover. It is as simple as that. I am not sure what is required for a transit visa. However, I am sure that you must go through passport control. There is no international transit area in the United States. International flights leave from the same place domestic flights do.

I was told recently there is a 2-step process for this in the US. You MUST go through some sort of check so they see who you are. But if you want to leave the airport there is YET ANOTHER step to go through. Haven't done it myself lately---just what I heard.

I'm going through MEX soon and wondering just how it works there?

If you want to avoid stopping in the US while traveling to South America I would suggest flying Air Canada. They have direct flights to Lima and other SA destinations. Canada has reciprocal visas with almost every country so no need to worry about that.
