Korean pop singer Kim Jang-hoon, who has been actively promoting international awareness of Korea's sovereignty over the Dokdo islets, is now on a mission to inform the world about the name of the sea that separates Korea and Japan.
According to public relations expert Seo Kyoung-duk, he and Kim plan to run a full-page advertisement in the New York Times, Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal showing why the sea should be labeled as the East Sea rather than the Sea of Japan. |

Calling it the "East sea" is quite as ego-centric as calling it the "Sea of Japan".
Should Japan then call it the "West Sea"? Or should all maps and countries refer to it as the East sea, regardless of it's direction from their native country?
How about picking a new name that is less contraversial?
Like maybe The Dokdo Sea |

What about the South China Sea? Gulf of Mexico? Etc...
A full page add, huh? Well, it'll make a nice lining for the bottom of bird cages.
Nobody cares and this ad will not change anything. Better to donate the money to charity. |

I've always thought The East Asian Sea would be good. It adds one word to the Korean name and yet does not favor one country over another. |

To heck with both Japan and Korea. Perhaps a less controversial name would be the Russian Sea. |

A more appropriate name could be, "Kim Jong Il's missile bin" |

For some reason I thought there was already an East Sea. Guess I need to take geography again. |

Silly... Don't you know that the West Sea is the proper name for the body of water that separates the Korean Peninsula and China? |

I usually try to at least see "the Korean side" of these arguments, but in this case I just can't. As many have pointed out, Korea's "East Sea" idea is ridiculously ethnocentric in that the body of water only lies east of one group of people, not the whole world. Is it that Koreans see it as a possessive rather than a limiter, that is "Japan's Sea" or "the Sea that belongs to Japan" as opposed to "the sea whose existence is defined by the presence of the body of land known as Japan." I have certainly always thought the latter was the case. I was never confused into thinking that it belonged to Japan, just was aware that if Japan were not there it would be, well, just more of the Pacific. |

As a United States citizen, I would like to urge everyone here to start using the name The Southeast Gulf instead of The Gulf of Mexico |
