Trying to get a feel for the best way to bring an external hard drive. One one hand - if I check it they will see this metal box that will surely set off flags. There is nothing on the hard drive that would get me into trouble. I would just rather avoid having TSA people sifting through my stuff.

I could carry it on the plane. But then I'll get pulled aside and asked to connect it. I'll need to boot up the laptop, plug in the external hard drive, etc.

So which do you think? Maybe I should just leave it at home....

I've carried an external with me on flights and never been asked to plug it in etc. No hassles at all.

carry. I've done this all the time, no problems. Normally its the dense battery that sets off flags, not the metal box.

My carry on had:

2 hard drives.
Palm Tungsten T5
Nintendo DS
Sony PSP
Dell HP Mini
Thinkpad T60

A MASS jumble of cables:
Cell phone charger
Cell phone USB charger
Nintendo DS charger
PSP charger
Bluetooth GPS receiver with charger
2 Mini USB cables
Camera charger
Ethernet cables
Dell Mini power adapter
Thinkpad power adapter
Palm power adapter

When my bag went through the little xray machine, the security come over and told me they had to inspect my carry on because there were so many cables and electronics in there. Seriously, if you opened up my carry on, all you would see is a complete mess of cables and hardware.

The Security at Dulles (Washington DC) put on a pair of gloves and just took everything out slowly. They did it right in front of me, and they didn't ask me any questions. After they saw there was no C4 they told me its clear. I put everything back and went about my way.

They didn't ask me to turn anything on. They didn't plug in my hard drive, etc...

If I could bring ALL THAT then I think you'll be alright with just an external hard drive OP.

Thanks. Maybe my paranoia is getting the best of me.

coming to Korea isn't a worry. I'd be far more concerned if I was taking that pile of electronics into the US.

I brought 500 3TB drives in, strapped to Shaggy, my Alpaca. No problems here, but customs did ask me if I was a court jouster.
