I am working for EPIK in Busan and am finishing my contract on August 31st. I am worried about receiving my airfare money and severance. I asked my school to pay for my flight home, but they refused. They said that the official policy is for me to buy my own ticket and I will get reimbursed when I get back to Canada. So I called up Ms. Choi at the education office in Busan and she confirmed what the school told me. As for the severance, I will receive that in Canada as well.

So my question is, should I be worried about not receiving the airfare money and severance? I believe I can trust my school, as well as EPIK, but I'm still a little worried. My school works by the book, so they will not budge on this.

Thanks for your help.

My school is also "by the book" and actually had originally agreed to reimburse me on my last day in Korea. Then I bought the ticket and they reneged on it and said after I leave. Tricky b*stards.

I can't stand my school anymore. I was just told after a year of having to come in half-days during vacation while my friends didn't come in at all that I have to come in ALL day til I leave... and again, my friends don't go into school at all, take lengthy trips to Jeju, Seoul, multiple countries... and I feel like I'm in jail. I even have to check in and out each day with administration.

I hear you, man. Our schools are the same. I have to deskwarm as well. I'm supposed to be here from 9am-3pm, but I leave at 12. Nobody cares. Nobody's here anyway. However, your situation sounds worse. You have to check in and out with admin.? WTF? Shocked

What about your severance? Are you getting that before the last day of your contract or after? I'm getting it after, which sucks.

I doubt it. My main coteacher is the one who arranged for them to pay me my last day in Korea and she`s gone the entire vacation. Since they changed their mind about the airfare, I don`t doubt they are changing their minds about severance too. I worry because my school`s admin has screwed up paying me on time and the correct amount so when I leave the country, I wonder if everything will go through as its supposed to. I`m skeptical.
