| So what do I do then? Now and if and when I get sick of knowing about the shady tactics and am looking for a reason to bail? |

Nothing. If you're not going to work in Korea again, when you get ready to leave, leave. Pull a runner. Normally I wouldn't suggest this, but if the boss isn't legit, oh well. |

If the only thing they are holding from your check is 4.4%, something is not right. That's all I know. |

At 2.2m per month, you should be paying 98,500 per month for a total of 197k per month accruing in the account. Amount varies by gross income level.
Is it really true schools don't have to pay in the 1st month?
This is what an NPS officer said to me when I called a few days ago when I mentioned my school has fallen behind upon saying the amount is short of my expectation. I'm employed 15 months, but only have 11 months on file and should finally have 14 months altogether by next month; not 15 months worth. Smell any corruption here? |

Schools will often pay in quarters, every 3 months. So, if they are about to pay your next installment, then 11 + 3 months would be the expected 14 months. Just ask them when the last payment was. |

| i reckon i am just bitter here... but for all listening. seems to me that 99% of all hakwons are sh**. (the percentage given to me by a labor lawyer was actually higher) they may or may not pay into pension depending upon how much money they have behind them and how large the school is. they may or may not give you proper medical insurance. they may or may not pay ur taxes properly. 9 out of every 10 hakwons are run by snakes and cannot be trusted. |

and yet, 100% of hagwons that I know personally or through someone I know, are great, better than public schools
all depends on who runs it, just like any other business |

| and that, my dear, would speak in favor of my terrible luck. my previous hakwon- if it can be called that- was unable to hold on to its korean teachers. students always coming and going. business headed nowhere fast. just got myself involved in a bad situation. in this case the school was run horribly to say the least. watch out for CHILD U private academies. no one has heard of them for a reason. |

I have something to add to my question.
I will pay a one time, 180,000 won (half) emergency medical insurance payment.
Could this at all be related to pension stuff?
I know its a bit off topic, but kind of insurance are they legally supposed to cover me with? |

It's not related exactly to pension, but it is related to items that should come out of your check. They are legally required to cover you with NHIC, National Health Insurance. Before they could get away with private insurance if they have less than 5 employees, but the rules changed and they have to provide you with NHIC now. The 180 thing sounds like some kind of private insurance, which you can have to supplement the NHIC, but you MUST have NHIC. NHIC costs 2.45% of your salary. No exceptions.
An example. NHIC pays half your bills basically. So, let's just say you get hit by a bus and in the hospital, it's gonna cost you. The emergency insurance would cover the remaining balance from NHIC probably. But you MUST have NHIC to be legal. |

| The pension dude from my local regional office came to my school today to deal with the papers and get copies of my stuff.. He was showing me the amount I'm going to be refunded.. it's the 1 year of pension (correct) minus some sort of national tax. 2,160,000 - 55,992. (actually it said 1,800,000 - 46,660 b/c it was the 10th month breakdown.. but anyway) Is there really this tax? >_> |

Interesting take on how the Gwangju Foreign school handled the late start with the national Pension.
"Gwangju foreign school and pension
There was a post about the Gwangju Foreign school and their handling of the pension on another site. The school never had the pension until recently. So in a sense the owners of the school have been flouting the law for a good 8 years. Hardly surprising considering their track record. Mrs Holley in a meeting with the staff tried to explain it away by saying the school was given permission to not have it. Mr Holley who supposedly has a legal background should have been there to support her but wasn't. Now no body gives an institute permission to not offer the pension to it's staff, so what she said was total Bull---t . The only way a Korean buisness or academy gets exempted is if an alternative plan is used. Of course there wasn't any such alternative plan at Gwangju Foreign school, so Mrs Holley swung a fast one over on unsuspecting teachers who were more concerned about hanging on to their jobs than challenging the issue.
At the meeting Mrs Holley did offer back payments to those who requested it, but no documentation or forms were provided for the teachers to show what the options available really were. In reality the teachers should have taken the owners up on the offer and requested that they paye the 4.5%of all of their previous earnings. Unfortunately for the teachers this was glossed over by the Mrs Holley in such a way as to make it appear to be too complicated to consider. Teachers didn't get proper representation to ensure that they got a fair deal, nor were they aware of just what was happening. This was probably what the Holleys wanted, and is just another exploitation job by unscrupulous owners. Seems to be the grain at a lot of places. A little dissappointing to see this side of the Holleys especially since they profess to be upright church going citizens and pillars of the community.
I find it incredible that the the other owner Mr Robert Holley who professes to have passed the bar exam for the state of West Virginia should allow his wife to get set up so that she would commit a form of purgery. She lied like she always does, and was quite blatant about it. No oath needed for her infractions, because they're too bloody obvious. Now what the hell kind of lawyer would allow that in a buisness he is associated with. I am wondering if there is such a term as a shonkey lawyer, because it's certainly applicable here. |

| speaking of unsrcrupulous owners who do not offer pension... i recommend that all teachers stay away from hakwons going under the name CHILD U. the director of my school claimed to have no clue what the pension was and so i was never offered any such plan. (to go a step further i was not covered under the korean health plan either so this witch was breaking the law in many ways) please teachers do yourselves a favor: watch out for CHILD U hakwons. dangerous territory. you may never have heard of this chain of schools. however there would be a good reason for that. |
