If anyone has any suggestions of a good conversation textbook for fourth year university students, I'd love to hear them. Outside of a few students, most are not the greatest English speakers (but how can you be, when you don't practice right?), but I'd like to find a book with engaging and controversial topics to discuss. It happens that a few of the controversial texts I have are for advanced students, and I need something a little more... how do we say... dumb-downed. Thanks everyone.

usually its difficult to find one all inclusive good book. I would use a calibration of a couple....to suit their level and to get a wide range of topics.

One i like is impact issues....read a short excerpt....and then discuss, some topics are dumb, but others like, international relationships, euthanasia, abortian, terrorism, reincarnation, are all interesting and evoke very interesting conversation. Plus the reading section is good too.

Thanks. The truth is the students have to have 'a textbook', so I'll look into that one.

Try "Springboard". Oxford UP books are great because they come with tons of on line support. You don't need any support for Springboard though, and it's not made with a cookie cutter.

I think books like

How Far Will You Go? : Questions to Test Your Limits
by Evelyn Macfarlane (Author), Evelyn McFarlane (Author), James Saywell

Or

The Book of Questions
by Gregory Stock

Check on Amazon. They are filled with simple questions like

If you could have any superpower what power would you want?
OR
What item do you have that is the most valuable that you have?
OR
What is the best thing you have ever found?
OR
What is your favourite sexual postion? Wink
You may want to skip some of those questions.

Also I recomend doing one or two of the questions and suplementing with some examples and vocabulary. I mean will a korean student know - psychic or Telekenesis, or Invisibility?

Email me and I will email a list of some of my popular questions!

Wink

Type 'conversation questions' into the yahoo search engine and you will find a huge list of questions on a wide variety of topics. Cool
