I have 18 days left and I've purchased my ticket outta here...and today I'm served up a boatload of criticism about all of my afternoon Kindies wanting to quit and that my class is boring. Now I've stuck it out and I have worked really hard to become the best teacher that I could be under the circumstances...and I'm scared that I won't get my bonus.

However, if I don't get my bonus, the other foreign teachers may reevaluate their commitments, and my replacement (who arrives for training sometime next week) will learn that he is working for a crapwon in time to do something about it.

Korea confusing!!!

It's not a 'bonus'. It's severence pay - a lawful entitlement.

I thought my previous 2 schools would also pull a fast one, and leave me bonus-less on my final day in Korea. But thankfully they had the good sense to do what they're contracted to do.

If they didn't, i'd have posted about the school everywhere i could.

A schools reputation is important and you have the power to hurt it (vis-a-vis the recruitment of native English speakers).

I'd say you'll be ok. Maybe you should try to contact previous teachers who finished their contracts (unless they all did a midnight run!!!). I'm sure you'll be fine. It's still not nice having doubt...that's part of life in Korea, cant trust 'em!!

Keep in mind though that they have the power to sue you...even if you stick to the facts. And they'd be able to identify you by any details you gave...you'd have to be pretty vague...and most people tend to ignore vague warnings. It's pretty much a Catch-22.

I wouldn't worry about anyone suing you. Oooh! Go right ahead. Pfft.

Anyway, don't listen to these people criticizing your teaching. Maybe they want to sign you on for another year or are ticked that you aren't. With the former, they'd be beating you down for an excuse not to give you a raise on a 2nd contract. Doesn't matter. You're leaving, so just play it cool for your remaining days. Find out exactly when they plan on paying you your last pay and severance. That should be your last day of teaching. Going by their standards, it will be at the 11th hour. So if you finish teaching at 8:50, you'll get paid at 9 pm.

They should pay it as people have said, it is legally what you are entitled to. Because I had worked at my company for 3 years, the severance was paid by two different divisions, but in the end (I just checked) all 11 million was paid up in full so I'm a happy camper. Sadly this money is going straight to our new apt. that we're moving into later this month, but oh well it's still money earned.

i heard this dilemma so many times. Yes, some of the teachers didn't get their severance pay but there are complications though mostly it's the teachers fault. Don't be like them who pulled an attitude and were sorry after.

If they REALLY weren't going to pay you they would have fired you at the 10th or 11th month. Re; their criticism now it's commonly heard on Dave's how the greatest F teachers in the world (ROK), come contract near end and they don't renew, get criticized on. I'd say you're ok but if they DO crap out on you let everybody on Dave's know just for the record, since you brought it up and are in the spotlight on talent.

Other than these kindy criticisms, do you have any reason to believe you won't get paid.

Have other teachers been cheated?
Have you been cheated on any pay?
When did the last teacher leave? What was their experience?

If you are seriously worried tell them you'll be back in a couple of months working in another hogwan in the same city(for better and less hours off course). Announce to the new teacher in front of the boss, "We should really keep in touch, if you have any problems contact me", then turn to the boss and ask if they've transferred your funds yet(if they say yes, check right away!). A lot of bosses cheat foreigners because they believe you're not coming back and once you're on the plane it's too late. Make them feel a little paranoid.
