I was wondering if anyone is currently using or has used a slingbox in Korea. I am considering the purchase of one before I head back to Korea but I want to know how well it has worked for others. I know it will have to buffer when it first loads up but want to know if the service is smooth after that initial buffering or if it is constantly buffering. Thanks.... |

I have a slingbox, and love it. It mostly depends on the connections speed as far as the buffering is concerned. On this end, you will have a great connection. In N.A. it depends on what provider you are with. Also, some providers only give you a certain amount of uploading availability. So they could tack on more money to the N.A. internet account.
That said, I only once had gone over the limit, and paid $25 CDN. And that month, I watch alot.
It is a great machine. If you can set it up to a recording device as well as the cable, you will be that much more happier.
I have the slingbox pro. Nothing but goodness. I route it through my 32 inch flat screen, and while not a perfect picture, it is good enough.
Others may come on here and suggest that you simply download what you want. Or, find various online TV streams. I totally understand the desire to come home at night and simply flick through the channels, rather than dowloading or serching for various shows or events.
That said, I also use a program called graboid. For $5 a month, I can download an entire season of hour long TV shows. They also have tons of movies to pick from.
Good luck. I didn't regret buying mine. |

There's also a program called SopCast that you can download. Basically it works a bit like SlingBox but you have no control over what's being shown. You can find sites that will list the various programs being shown and which channel to find them on. I use it to watch NFL games when I can. I've also found UFC and boxing on there. They also show soccer and rugby in addition to tons of other sports. Check it out. |

The online solutions (sopcast, Justin.tv, etc...) aren't reliable. Especially for sports games. You are at the mercy of the person streaming. If there is too many people watching, then the bandwidth chokes.
The slingbox is the best way to go. |

I bought and set-up a slingbox when home (US) after my first year here.. It works great for the most part, but I've had trouble with it off and on. Think it's due mostly to the virus software on my small laptop, though... There can be several programs on your computer that interfere with it being able to connect and read the slingbox properly, so you may have to tinker around those at first.. I found that disabling your virus program while your computer "looks for" and connects to the slingbox helps.. Once it connects you can turn your virus software back on with no problems...And sometimes I'll just lose connection and have no idea what causes it.. Could be a number of things like the internet provider I have here.. Or the speed of the internet where my slingbox is set up..Once connected properly though, it's GREAT to watch the channels from home.. especially my beloved "Turner Classic Movies".. |

before coming out i looked into a slingbox... while i was looking at my local bestbuy i came across the HAVA. it's the same exact concept just a different company with almost nobody knowing about it. I found it to be a lot cheaper and it works just fine for me. I paid like $125 for it have cable for the year. a few times i have issues with connection speed, but that seems to be an issue even with the slingbox. If you can find a HAVA for cheaper than a slingbox than I would recommend going that route. I'm more than happy with the purchase. |
