ok, some of the posters on here are calling certain bands sell outs, or non talented acts etc, which I think is just BS...

well, lets talk about 80's glam rock bands that dominated the charts!

lets hear some opinions...

ok I just named a few artists are dominated the charts in the 80's..

Im just curious to hear from some the over 30's crowd who remember these guys ...

personally I thought they rocked! but then again, thats just me..
I think these guys were the first commercial MTV rock stars who obviously idolized the 70's rockers, but those bands didnt perform on MTV..
so these guys where the first commercial pop rockers with music videos..

of course I could list much more..
but I think it fair to say these guys were on the top...

I'm in on this one. I agree, there were a boat load of great tunes from the hair band metal scene of the 80's, but unfortunately, it was a sort of "cookie cutter" fad. All the bands you listed had some great tunes.

Side note - I don't think you can fully include Aerosmith as a "hair band". They started up in the 70's, had a plethra (word = 100 points atleast) of good tunes in that decade and their music was a bit different from the hair metal flavor.

You did pretty much list the top 7 of that era. Most of the songs that made the charts from this genre (did I spell that correctly) were ballads. Let's continue the list:

This thread has kind of bummed me out. I can recall a lot of memories in relation to the music being discussed. Good times, crazy sh........

For the most part, what you are saying is true. Although, you have pseudo-glam artists like Ozzy who will alway's stand the test of time. And a non-glam band, Metallica, from that era who will absolutely go down in history. There are scattered tunes from glam-bands that were somewhat original, but your right, the cookie-cutter was too prevelant.

Two of the best 80's metal stories I've ever heard.

George Lynch of Dokken was filming a guitar solo for a music video standing on a live volcano when it actually started to erupt. By the time he and the crew had rahn too da choppa it had melted the soles of his shoes. Legend has it that the eruption was caused by the awesome power of Lynch's solo.

Guess how Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P got second degree burns on his *beep* during a concert one night? Was it A) He got too close to the pyrotechnics, B) A cigarette got stuck in his leather chaps, or C) His flaming codpiece accidentally exploded?

Yep, you guessed it.

I'm a little confused on how to define "glam rock." I grew up in the of "hair bands" so I'm guessing they're pretty much the same in this thread.

I also don't see The Scorpions as a glam band.

There were so many of them. KiSS. They were pretty glam.
My guess is the genre got started around when Bowie was doing his makeup-filled set. Gary Glitter with his rings and beads was an early glammer.
Anyway, not a genre I was into. Motown and blues served me better.

I'm glad that I'm old enough to remember a lot of '80s music. But as far as metal, I do notice two distinct types.

In the early '80s (maybe '80 - '85), you had the metal band with the ammo belts, spiked wrist band and gloves, tight black pants, and lots of dry ice. I think of Piece of Mind-era 'Maiden, Judas Priest, and early Accept.

Then perhaps around '86 or so, I saw the bands getting more glam-like. Poofy hair, wild colors, slick production levels, etc. Hysteria-era Def Leppard, Poison, Cinderella, etc. The closest CD that I have that would be considered glam-metal would be Gn'R's first CD. But even they were more sleaze than glam.

Oddly enough, I think that the height of all that '80s metal was probably in 1990. Although, I'm not a fan of grunge, it was refreshing when it came on the scene around '91 or '92.
