basically, where? a place where i am not going to get ripped off.

been looking around a lot today around jongno mainly. the rings on display there are zirconia (cheap diamond imitation) and you buy the diamond and they send the ring away to be re-set with the diamond. now, i am no jewel expert, so how do i know when i get the ring back that they haven't just left the zirconia in the ring and the diamond is in their pocket?

i just want a place where i can buy a nice, not too expensive diamond ring with the diamond already set into the ring. any ideas?

I'll give you some GOOD advice:

DONT BUY A DIAMOND IN KOREA.

Seriously. THinking of proposing or something? I looked EVERYWHERE for a decent ring. You can go the route of a place like Tiffany's that has quality, but you're looking at 20-50mil for the ring.

Korean jewelery is cheap, low budget CRAP. Seriously.

If you want a good diamond ring buy it back home.

(Internet shopping is another place you might pick up something you want, but if you are like me, you'll probably want to "try before you buy".)

it's all about COSTCO. There are several in Korea. The rings come with certs and all the other stuff. They sell a certain quality and dont go below that. Plus Costco has the greatest return policy, money back no questions asked to any store world wide. Selection may be limited but shop around at different stores.
Happy hunting

Well I tend to disagree, my fiance got my ring here, we picked it out from a shop in Itaewon its a diamond with a white gold band, to be honest its really beautiful, and like everyone else I was skeptical about what I was been sold. So when I went home for xmas I brought it to a jewlers to be checked out and yes its exactly what they said it was. The store is in Itaewon just next to nashvilles, they have some really nice rings and some really Korean rings, just guess it what you want to pay for it, mine was about 2.5million.

Well I'm not materialistic, whatever he'd have given me would have made me happy, its not as if we don't have the money, but its whether its something that you both love and enjoy its not a competition on how many stones you got on your finger that attitude really bugs me.

Surprised he stuck it out with you. No offense but if any girl ever said that to me, she'd be wondered where I went.

For the record I didn't buy my wife an engagement ring. She's Korean and didn't want one anyways.

We both agree whatever you will spend on a diamond ring is better spent on travelling.

We bought a nice ring at a dept store. It was a white gold Tiffany style ring with zirconium in it for about $350. We also got a couple set. The 'Tiffany' one is very rarely worn anyway. I did lots of research for diamonds and basically found the only really reputable grading system is the GIA one (think thats what it is called). GIA diamonds are hard to get here and more expensive than you'd get from OS. There are two popular grading systems here and a heap of other lesser known ones. They are not as reputable as the GIA system. If I pay $1000-$2000 for a diamond I must know 100% for certain it is reputable. Thus, when we go OS oneday I will buy the diamond there and use it to replace the zirconium. but thats just me...

good luck. I hope things go smoothly.

Just what we think! I didn't get an engagement ring, and I didn't spend any money buying gifts for my (Korean) husband's family.

5,000 won for a ring is not expensive.
