Does anyone know if Friday is considered a holiday, since Saturday is Liberation Day? |

No, they don't think the same way as we do in Korea. If the holiday falls on the weekend, there's no holiday. We've missed a few holidays this year because of this. |

I'm keeping tabs. We have 6 days off in 2009, including Chuseok and Seolnal. 3 of our national holidays were in the first month. That leaves one in May, one in October (Chuseok) and one in December (Xmas).
Next year is similar.
And I've heard companies are pleased with this lack of holidays because it means they can 'increase productivity' with the extra hours. No wonder the gov't won't change weekend holidays to a day when they can properly be observed, like any other sensical country.
Hey you! Stop reading Dave's Cafe and get back to work! |

Seems like they don't care about all the other holidays, but they schedule Chusok in the week. Or can you have a Chusok on a Sat/Sun? |

For both Chuseok and Seonnal, there are three days in a row taken as holiday: the day before, the holiday itself, and the day after. For other holidays, it's just the day of the holiday itself that's a day off. For this year, Chuseok itself is on a Saturday.
As to why the dates aren't shifted for other holidays, it's really pretty simple. Not everyone gets the same contract as we "weoneomin" do with guaranteed Saturdays and Sundays off. Generally, Saturdays (at least a half day) are considered working days in Korea. For us, a holiday falling on a Saturday is meaningless as we already have the day off; however, others do get a holiday instead of working as normal on that day. Another thing to remember is that it really hasn't been all that long (depending on your home country) that your home country's been shifting holidays from weekends. |
