how do u grill chicken or fish in a pan?... im not being sarcastic here. really, how does one do that? just with olive oil or something? i think i tried that before and the chicken became this half leather / half rubber, tasteless brick.
i have found pre-made salads at the stores before. they look great. mixed, tomato, spinach, caesar... it would be wonderful. except that they all expire the next day or day after. were they to last longer i'd buy two weeks worth at a time a supplement them with some chicken or boiled egg. but its just not affordable (or convenient for that matter) to get to one of the mega stores ever day or other day. so i looked at making my own salads and its all the same. i got two salads out of a head of lettuce before it went brown. same for the spinach.
please, keep ur ideas coming. the western cooking sticky is not all that great. there were 1 or 2 good healthy recipes there. most of it was typical daves stuff (posters making random comments about it)... and please, for petes sake, keep ur Pasta recipes to urself. it seems the only other non-pizza western food koreans r into is spaghetti. ive had enough of that too! |

Don't know about grilling, but I happen to like baked chicken. But, in Korea, I didn't have an oven.... see the problem?
Well, I came up with something. Take chicken breast. Cut up into bite size pieces (very important). Put in a microwave safe dish. Cover with Italian dressing. Cook in microwave for about 5 minutes. Take out and stir. Be careful because it might "pop". Cook for another 3 minutes.
The chicken breast comes out very moist and flavored. Most of the bad part of the dressing stays in the bowl. It's good with salad, with rice, lots of things. It really is amazing how moist it is considering chicken breast is usually dry to begin with.
But make sure you cut the pieces small so that they cook all the way through. |

I got some cutlet and chicken pieces, and cheese sticks, and forgot to get olive oil, so I just made them in the pan, without anything. I figured the pan's Teflon is good enough and the food can use its own fats/ice that accumulated around it from being in the freezer.
It didn't burn and it was...edible. |

Man where do you live? Go to a HomePlus, Emart, etc. and take your time!
Those bags of instant spaghetti in the refrigerated section are awesome. Breaded shrimp for frying, raw fish, salads, good American beef is both delicious and dirt cheap, bbq chicken, I could go on and on.
What did you make when you lived back at home? Not that you can get everything here but I think there is enough to get by on as long as you live near one of those mega grocery stores.
Also not all Korean food is similar. For example a nice bowl of Sam Gae Tang (chicken soup) tastes more western than Korean and is damn good! |

Chicken and beef are not difficult to do in a pan. It's probably easiest to cut everything into bite sized chunks, but you can also pan fry the whole filet just as easy. Just throw on a bit of olive oil, season your breast/filet/whatever however you like and cook it on a low/medium setting. My gas stove here is a lot hotter than any electric oven I owned throughout uni so I usually cook on one of the lower settings.
After the chicken starts to brown a bit, throw some chopped veggies in. I usually use a lot of carrots, peppers, and broccoli, but whatever you like should work.
Cooking in the microwave = disgusting. Seriously guys. I'm not a 4 star chef or anything, but there's plenty you can do with just two burners. |

I call everyone a dude. If I spoke English with my mom, I would probably call her dude. |

Ahhh the K-Food breakdown. The first time I experienced it was back in America at church- Dduk soup again??? (At least they had the sense go with more Western friendly selections more often) Then after two months here. Now I feel like I've stabalized, but who knows.
I would whole heartedly recommend the trial and error method to cooking. It can lead to such benefits as weight-loss and having plenty of spite-gifts handy. You'll probably turn out a decent cook after a couple of months. And if you don't you'll only be out a whole bunch of money and time. |

The first thing I did when I moved here was buy a Steamer and a Blender. I steam veggies, rice, fish, mandu... and I make smoothies in my blender all the time.
Easy. Healthy. No real cooking skills required. Although I do miss having a huge kitchen with every gadget imaginable! I love to cook.
Anyone know where I can find fresh basil, cilantro and dill? I planted an herb garden on my balcony, but they are taking forever to grow. |
