My recruiter has fudged the truth a bit and doesnt know that I have had a friend call the school I'm going to be working at to get some answers.

I dont mind that school is in the boonies (thats a whole other thread)...but I would like to see if I could get a few provisions before I set foot on a plane to make life a little easier.

When my NOA arrives...is that the time to speak up?

No, the time to speak up is sooner than later. I've heard of at least 1 case when the guy showed up in Korea, and the school didn't like how he looked, so they didn't let him come work. But that was in... 2002. Point being, it is never too late for them to get rid of you. They can fire you after 1 month and take your airfare out of your paycheck.

If there are some things you are going to demand, do it now.

Another reason, if you have the NOA, that means the contract has already been submitted, so if you demand things, they say sure, but nothing is in writing. So, when you get there, the things you wanted, you don't get.

Another reason, they will look at you as a trouble maker.

Be up front, and you can work things out.

ps or hogwan?

have your friend get the answers you seek.

also insist on a contact e-mail of current net or teachers (if in hogwan)

be leery of making demands.. as your negotating strength at this point in time is about nil.

but an honest expression of possible concerns and problem areas, if done politely and earnestly shouldn't cause a problem.

It's a public school....and unfortunately i'm the first foreigner they've ever had....so I cant get any specific info on the situation.

Apparently the school houses its teachers in a dorm in a small town up the road which may or may not be in Gyeonggi-do!

usually ps have on net.

what do you mean it houses it teachers? what teachers?

in a dorm? no privacy?

probably an x-nay for me

(also consider school distance and transportation issues) and what you'd have to do in that small town, where you could buy things, etc

well...when my friend called the school...she told them (politely) that she thought it might be better to put me in Pocheon (which is the town I'm assigned to).

The school said that they have a dorm in Gwanin-myeon that they house their teachers in. I'm not sure what this means exactly.

The school itself is south of Gwanin-myeon (down 87) in Jung-ri.

My recruiter has assured me that my school is 15 minutes from Pocheon...so I'd like to be placed in Pocheon and NOT in Gwanin-myeon.

I'd feel the same way.

What scares me more is this concept of being house in a dorm.

in a dorm with WHOM?

that houses WHAT teachers? you're the first NET they've had. What Korean teachers live in a dorm? (I'd be running away from being house with co-workers anywhere, though I find it hard to believe any adult Korean teacher would live in a "dorm" anyways)

I suspect this is come cheap place they found to stick you in. (and convenient - for THEM, that is)

do I get my own room? do I go and do as I please?

I'd be way post "dorm life". This isn't the army... or a uni anymore for that matter. You're an adult. Insist on being treated like one.

I'd advise proceeding with GREAT caution on this one. Have you already signed the contract?

Gwanin-myun is 5km up north from your school. Pocheun City is 20km down south. If you are new to Korea then won't make much difference in either places. If they mean, living in a same apartment block with other teachers as 'dorm', then that'll be advantageous for you. At least they can speak 'some' English. There's always an option of finding your own place at 400,000 a month housing allowance.

True, but that's a bit of a daunting task for someone new to Korea.
