do the korean teachers generally dress up a lot or is it more casual dress? i know dressing kind of too casual among koreans can lead to judgmental attitudes, so i want to avoid it if i have to teach asshole middle schoolers. any advice about clothes? i asked someone in the program about this and she basically just said NO JEANS. halp! |

I assume you're a guy? Minimum is a dress shirt and slacks. Other than that it depends on your school. If they didn't say specifically, probably you don't need suits. Think.... bank teller? |

Tank top, mini-skirt, cleavage are definitely out.
Think school-marmish, think librarian. Ankle length skirts, long one-pieces, high-neck blouses, slacks etc. |

SORRY~~!!!
I just assumed since they said no jeans you were a guy. MY BAD. I apologize. And I was playing the odds. There seem to be a lot more guys on these boards than girls, lol.
Proper skirts and slacks are appropriate. Shirts... nothing revealing. Modesty is key. |

Haha, no, he's not trolling. Mom's closet, lol.
If it makes you feel better, clothes over there are more geared towards your height. Knee length skirts are ok.... depending on the school. First day, play it safe!!!!!! |

Depends on where you work. The further you are out in a rural setting, the less they care. You could walk in with torn jeans and smoke regularly at the corner. They are just happy to see you show up.
If you are teaching business classes in the center of Seoul, then that won't work. What I do is dress up for the initial week or so. I get an idea of who I am teaching. If someone comes in with a Boston Red Sox baseball cap, then I know they aren't going to care much. |

In the West, middleschoolers are by far the hardest kids to teach. (Here in Korea, I think it's upper elementary and lower middle who are the hardest. So, about the same. But they're not as difficult as middleschoolers back home.) Developmentally, it makes sense - there's the largest range of developmental ability, and having students at such different points - not just in aptitude but in maturity - makes for a more challenging job. |
