I'm in Busan and it's been raining for weeks and weeks. There's been a few days where the weather has been nice (blue sky), but the monsoon seems to still be going!

So is this normal, I thought it'd only last 4 weeks or so?

What's it been like up in Seoul?

I was going to go to Jeju in a couple of days but it's just not worth it if it rains for half the days I'm there....

Ask your students/Korean friends to explain the Chinese lunar calender concept called "Yoondal" and "Yoonyun": In order to catch up nature's cycle every four years - their calender is missing a few days every year, so every four years - add another month. Something like that - this explains the long monsoon. It's like right now is July. BUT it's not. It's really June 23rd.

According to this explanation, we can expect a longer summer. However every time this happens, it can fall on a different month - this year it falls in summer. That's the reason that the Korean holiday "CHUSEOK" will be in October this year instead of the normal September.

In any case, you can expect a longer summer than normal. Summer came late this year.

In the Chinese calender, there are three kinds of summers: 1st summer, 2nd summer, and 3rd summer. Usually, after today (supposed to be the Hottest day of the year) - the weather cools off. But because of "yoondal" that might not be the case. This year, we had 2 Mays. So according to the lunar calender, today is really JUNE 23rd.

The beginning of the Fall is supposed to be Sept 23rd.

Hope that makes sense.

ditto. i abhore summer. one reason to like seoul is the mountain of snow that shows up an stays for 6 months. i love the cold. in winter i leave my windows open all day. i love to feel that crisp cold air pour in. so refreshing.

and last winter we got cheated man. there was snow for all of 5 days last winter. and i was here all winter, didnt travel like normal. and the whole time, there were only two weeks where i wore a jacket, a jacket - not a coat - didnt even need my coat this year. most days just had jeans and a long sleeve shirt. i was pissed. winter sucked this year. so if we have a warm winter and a long hot summer back to back, im gonna snap.

im seriously considering teaching somewhere in Hokkaido, Japan next year, just to be in a place where it never gets above 75 degrees in the dead of summer and the snow stacks up 4 feet for 9 months out of the year. im pretty sure that'd be heaven for me.

You must have really hated last year.

Seoul really has not gotten much rain this summer. In July we had like 4 days of serious rain and the odd drizzle outside of that. We just had 2 days of rain but its been pretty pathetic... all the rain is going elsewhere this summer.

Yea, right into Busan.

Are you guys telling me you've had blue skies?

Anyone from Jeju: what's the weather been like there recently?

It's been raining a lot this Summer. Today is one of the sunniest days so far in a long time. Wednesday of last week was sunny, but it's been cloudy and rainy. The rivers are very high and muddy brown right now just like in early July monsoon season. It just poured cats and dogs all of yesterday from Sun up to Sun down.

Reason why the weather is more cloudy and rainy this Summer is 2 typhoons as well as tropical weather are influencing our climate more so this year than previous. While we didn't get hit by the typhoons, they spun off a great deal of clouds and rain, but it's all clearing out now. Expect some hot sunny weather now.

I don't mind the rain because it keeps the temperature a bit cooler. It's over 30 today and even though the walk to work is only 2 minutes long, I always break a small sweat. I hate the heat. Looking forward to the cold months...

Well today is the last day of the summer here. Thats why they serve this nice chicken with rice and chestnuts inside everywhere today. (Koreans traditionally eat this the first, middle and last day of the summer). But it look like the weekend will be really great here in Seoul at least Smile

All this public school vacation time is nice, but it sucks that it rains too much to take advantage of it.

I got back into Korea in July. I think there were 3 days of rain. The weather was unusally cool for a Korean summer. I've been in Daejeon for the past few weeks and it has only rained for 3 days...2 of those were this week. I've NEVER seen so many blue skies in all my 10 years living in Korea. Of course, I lived in Seoul for most of those 10 years.

This has been an unusual summer for sure.

Yep, the sunny hot weather is here as I expected. I love Summer, except having my shirt just drenched in sweat especially getting a stair climbing workout going in and out of subways like I did yesterday. Seoul is a serious walking and stairclimbing task that will leave you just drenched in this weather, but the Korea don't seem to sweat a bit.

Why don't Koreans sweat? They feel uncomfortably warm, complaining, and using hand fans, but are not sweaty wet like me and other Westerners. They're dry.
