How in high heavens can an elementary school teacher here pay rent on an apartment in Bangbae dong??? I know a girl here teaching at an American elementary school in Seoul, and she has an apartment in Bangbae-dong. The cheapest ones I saw on the website where she found her place were like 3,000,000 a month. I know elementary school teachers do NOT normally even get paid that much in a month. Do some elementary schools here actually let their teachers choose an apartment like this? She also looked at a place in Cheongdam before she chose the one in Bangbae...I don't get it. |

Yes, I've heard of it, but those apt listings were still expensive. I know someone who put down 5 million as cheonsae for a box. |

No such thing as 5 million chonse. Unless you are literally talking about a cardboard box, even then I wouldnt be too sure. |

A one room apartment in Seoul might have a Jeonsae of around 75 million. If your employer, family or bank loan will cover that, then you live rent free.
Banks in Korea give Jeonsae loans all the time to people with steady jobs. It's the done thing here. |

Yeah, but instead of rent, you have interest on a bank loan... and an apartment in bangbae-dong is more likely to have a 9-figure jeonsae... what would the interest be like on a 200,000,000 won loan?!? |

Sure. That's the downside. However, the bank loan interest payments are way lower than what the rent would be. The system wouldn't work if the interest payments were as much as rent would be. |
