I teach at an all boys high school. It's a mid sized city that's pretty convenient to live in.

Anyways I want to talk about corporal punishment aka ownerage K-teachers hand out.

Now to tell you a little bit about this school... the students wear uniforms and their hair is really short. Half of them have specs from apparently studying too hard. The crazy part in my opinion is how students have to remain in their class rooms and quietly study until 10:30PM when they are allowed to leave to their dorms or take a bus home. They then are woken up at 6AM for breakfast each day. Rinse lather repeat.

Then we have the pwnage. K-teachers have bamboo sticks they beat students with. It's usually 3~5 whippings to the buttocks, feet, legs. I've also seen my co-teacher slap students for reasons like not reporting to the teacher why they missed school. I see a ton of students in the hallways each day in standstill position or doing push ups everywhere. Same old same old.

But today I saw something spectacular. I saw one of the 'nicest' English teacher thew a major beat down on his entire class. When I arrived at 1st yr class today, I saw him line up the entire class in the hallway. If you can visualize this..they were all in a push up/arched position with their butts up high in the air. All just lined up like that, one beside the other. Then the K-teacher would kick them from the side and some of them would domino against one another. When a student was kicked and knocked over he would leave and the students still not knocked down would be kicked. This went on for 10 minutes. I have seen some crazy stuff but I think this takes the cake. My only regret is that I couldn't get this recorded.

We had a kid last year got beat with a flute for not learning fast enough. She was six yrs old... Scarred.

I asked everyone I knew what to do, and they all said, "It's not a big deal, here."

Word probably got round that this 'nicest English teacher' was being too soft. Threatened with a bad review(possible block to promotion) he had to hand out an asskicking to let his peers and higher ups know that he can turn old school when needed. A lot of 'nice' teachers get pressured to discipline the class, particularly when another (rival)teacher makes a complaint.

I talked to my co-teachers about this. They all say that the students know we are doing this out of love. I keep thinking they are doing it out of frustration. The same teacher invites me to his house for dinner and beats his 17-year-old son in front of me for some confusion respect thing that is probably beyond my comprehension.

The one part that irks me is how they beat students for having low test grades. As if their pride isn't already hurt enough.

All hierarchical societies breed bullies and cowards.

The beatings K PS teachers administer are just institutionalised bullying and cowardness (with a healthy does of sadism mixed in).

Welcome to Korea.

I've seen the same and even worse. The irony is the teachers that were doling out this punishment were the same one's who would complain too me that I was too strict or too angry for asking kids not to walk on desks / bring text books to class/ not shout over me while I was trying to teach etc...

'But you hit them and scream at them!'

'But I am Korean so they know I love them.'

'______________'

Damn I hate this industry.
