Just wondering if anyone is out there in rural Cheollanamdo: Haenam, Kangjin, Jindo, Wando, etc. Is there an actual expat population, or just a few eccentrics? Or do people pretty much stay in Mokpo and Gwangju?
I'm heading down that way at the end of the month, so heads up for one more gringo comin' your way. |

I'm in Naju which is in bewteen Mokpo and Gwangju. If i were you i'd go to Mokpo or Gwangju. More foreigners there to party or talk with. Then again they dont have the beauty of the countryside which i have here and it is more relaxed here. You can tend you still around with the same people. Also go to parties in Mokpo and Gwangju. |

Naju, really? I see it on my map here. Believe it or not, I'm really looking forward to the scenery and the countryside. If I need to see foreigners, I can always go to Mokpo or Gwangju.
By the way, is Ddanggut all it's cracked-up to be? Are the fossil beds out there more hype than anything else? How's Weolchulsan? All that stuff if relatively near you, right? |

Weolchulsan is meant to be good. You actually climb it.
Not too sure about the rest but there are loads of cultural things to do like the Moses Mircale etc.
You coming down here to work or holiday? Where yo gonna live? |

I climbed Wolchulsan last summer and found the path to be steep and rocky yet easy to walk along with stairs and guide rails where most needed. There's a large stream with nice pools to splash in under small waterfalls - but that's for a hot summer's day. A worthwhile journey.
Dogapsa, the nearby Buddhist temple in the mountains, is pretty nice too and the view, when a guy mosies up to the new public urinals, is incredible. |

We got those temples dotted all around Naju area. Just takes a long walk to get to them. |

Have you seen the Moses miracle? Now, that's out on Jindo, isn't it?
I'm gonna be down in Haenam. I'm aware that there's not much there, but that's the idea. 25,000 people? A town the size of mine? It can't be in Korea.
So you haven't been to the fossil beds? I wonder if they're anything like the ones in Go-seong.
Can't wait to get up to Weol-chul. I heard that it's like all the other famous ones, just less people and less portable toilets. |

I have been to DdangKkeut. It is very small. There is a modest beach, a lighthouse, and a few seafood restaurants. I recommend getting a ship from the small port there and going to one of the small islets about an hour away. The cost is very reasonable (I paid 7000 won each way). I went to Bogil do. It is a small island, but the people are very friendly, the beach is nice (in the summer!), and I had a really good meal there. Oh! Lots of beer as well |

Chunnam is a pretty good province to be it. True it is rural but I like the natural beauty. Plus, the local cuisine is some of the best to be found in the nation.
I also like the idea of doing things off the beaten track. You feel much more like an explorer in the rural areas and not so much the tourist. If you havn't done it yet I highly recommend going to Soruk-do. It's a leper colony but you can ramble around 1/2 of the island. It is quite beautiful. Before going to the island stop in the local port and buy some fresh fish for sashami. It can be quite the pleasant day. |

More information about the fossil beds, please!
I went to the ones in Hwasun last summer. It was awesome because it was completely undeveloped. |
