I'm curious about Naver.

Is it possible for Enghlish-only speakers to use it?

I tried search on Google for info about Naver and couldn't find very much. Nothing at all really useful to the questions I have about why more Korean owned business aren't on Google.

I read that Koreans, for a variety of reasons, overwhelmingly prefer to use Naver rather than Google. But.....it seems to me that any Korean business person who wants to reach the English speaking market would be wise to learn something about how Google works. Is that a fair assummption?

Back in the states I did some internet work, setting up blogs, key word research, content, etc. Lately, in my normal travels and in-out of businesses, when I've had a chance to discuss the issue with Koreans (in places where I go and if they speak English) I'm finding that they don't know squat about Google yet they still say they'd like to have more English speaking business.

I think they're missing the boat.

On another issue, does anybody know where the Google Korea headquarters is? And also Naver. I'd like to drop by sometime.

Regards,
Art

I believe they are in Kangnam. One of the two is near Yeoksam station, if memory serves. Can't remember which.

You would think so, wouldn't you?

The only use I've found for Naver is catching my uni students' plagiarism. Nearly all of them do it at least once, and 99%+ use Naver for it.

Naver is pretty awesome. The maps, bus schedules, weather, movies, dictionary - I use them all regularly.

If you're into comic books they have lots of good stuff, and the 지식iN section is good for random questions you might have.

That's exactly where I find all the plagiarism. Mostly from "Can someone translate this into English for me, it's my English homework" type of posts. It's nice of them to keep it all in one place so I'm not inconvenienced looking for it.

Gotta be careful because a lot of those posts are outdated. I remember one that recommended a great restaurant. I went to the address and it wasn't there anymore. The post was from 2007. I wish there was a way to flag old responses on there for removal.

Yeah, so true. I normally ignore anything more than a few months old.

I also remember being told that a lot of the questions are answered by elementary school students, so to take the info there with a grain of salt.

You're going to have trouble using Naver if you only know English but why not give it a try and find out for yourself?

If you're targeting the Korean market, you're really only concerned about having a presence on Naver, Daum and perhaps Cyworld/Nate. Naver dominates Korea more than Google does America.

Yes.

Google Korea is in Gangnam Finance Center (Star Tower). Naver's HQ is near AK Plaza in Seohyeon-dong (Bundang). Chances are, you won't get very far unless you have business there. There's a receptionist at the front and all guests need to have a host and sign in. Everything past the reception room is secured.

If you have legitimate business (more than I do Adwords/Adsense, have a blog, etc.), I could give you a contact at Google Korea. If not, I don't see the point of visiting but hey, you can always try for yourself.

I think that it has more to do with the surfing habits of Koreans vs er, westerners (??).

When I see Koreans online they are usually 1) shopping 2) looking up touring destinations 3) shopping...oh...well, anyway.---oh, they also love gossip about various "talent".

When i look for things to buy, I start with Naver which sends me to gmart or whatever.

I hardly ever see Koreans looking up information in general about something, and when I try to find information I don't find it very well on Naver.

If you're looking for information about restaurants, hotels, or whatever, yes, a lot of it is outdated. However, students who are using Naver to cut-and-paste their way through a homework assignment don't really care if the original post was written in 2006. I don't either; it's still a zero in my book.

My university department is talking about buying very expensive software for plagiarism detection. I think the simpler solution would be to use Naver!

I am told that the Naver management is very nationalistic and has little interest in making Naver friendly or accessible to non-Koreans. Am I thinking of Daum? Perhaps someone else here can confirm or refute that.
