Overhauling health-care system tops agenda at annual meeting of Canada's doctors
SASKATOON The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.
Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country - who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting - recognize that changes must be made.
"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.
"We know that there must be change," she said. "We're all running flat out, we're all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands."

Well, if they are so concerned, why did they go on strike back in 1961 opposing universal health insurance? Now they are saying that they are trying to save it?
The one big problem with the medical services and the healthcare system in Canada is because of the doctors. They have this arrogance about them that says that they are somehow special.
The best thing for the Canadian healthcare is to have less doctors and more services provided by other professionals. Why do so many people actually need to see a doctor for minor ailments? |

You don't mean 'less doctors', I assume, but an expanded role for other professionals. Right? There is no reason that I should have to go to a guy with a decade of post-sec education to get minor treatments. |

Maybe because they have the responsibility for people's lives in their hands on a daily basis? They have devoted their lives to the study of how to best help others?
If you do not think that is special, let a janitor do your next open heart surgery. |

You thought wrong. Not only could you be called a fool for your comments, but also your doctor.

The doctors I have come to know are in it for the money and the respect. I don't really think that most doctors take responsibility for people's lives on a daily business. As an organization, the have often put their own needs and desires before those of the sick. My point is, is that doctors went on strike to oppose universal healthcare. That is not what I call responsible behaviour.
I doubt that most doctors have devoted their lives to anything other than filling their own pockets. As a group in Canada, their association controls how many doctors come through the university system each year. They are the people who have put in place restrictions on the amount of doctors in Canada. As long as this group of doctors has its way the problems will never get resolved, as the doctors in Canada have often placed their interests before those of the general public.
Thanks Misses, I did not mean less doctors, but as you said there should be more health professionals other than doctors. Most ailments do not need the attention of a doctor. |

A little harsh, but its a refreshing perspective on doctors, anyway. |

Not sure how much this applies to Canada, but in America Average salaries for physicians have been decreasing in recent years while malpractice premiums have been skyrocketing and responsibilities increasing. The art of medicine has suffered and has been replaced with an emphasis on defensive medicine. This is not your father's practice.
Psychiatrists, for example, who once used to be able to sit down with and get to know their patients, have now essentially been turned into medication managers, allowed 15 minutes per patient in what has practically become an assembly-line operation.
And no amount of compensation is adequate for the pediatric oncologist who must endure the loss of several young patients each year. I don't know how they do it. |

The Canadian population is expanding much too fast for the socialized health care system to keep up. If we had more population stability then the waiting lists, shortages and the rest would be manageable. Every year approximately 500,000 individuals gain access to the system but the system does not expand capacity anywhere near that (or at all) to meet aggregate needs. |

Yes, but if so it's probably also expanding too quickly for any health care system to keep up, at least if it wants to cover the entire nation's population. |
