This seems to have developed after installing SP 3.

If I go to my computer's explorer window and double click on a removable storage folder (flash drive, mp3 player, etc) i get the message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

If I go through the explorer side bar I can access the data no problem. Anyone seen this before?

Sounds like your flash drive had an autorun virus. If you run AV, it probably deleted the infected autorun as so Windows doesn't have any instructions on what to do with it.

Diskheal can re-create your autorun.inf file.

Change your folder options so that you can see hidden files and folders. This will probably reveal some file xxxx.bat, a file that runs using the flash drives' autorun.inf in order to infect the host.Your AV will find this and delete it as well.

I get this problem every time I use a flash drive in a classroom.

The best protection is to get the program usbwp which means "USB Write Protection". This needs to be run on the host computer before you plug in your flash drive. It will disable Windows writing anything to the drive. It will still be readable, so you can use it, but nothing can be saved (written) on the drive. On the first day of classes, I put this on each computer I will be using, then run it before class.

Hmm, the only hidden files were svchost and autorun. No .bat file. But deleting the autorun seems to have "fixed" the problem.

Thanks for the lead, though. Was messing with the folder options in control panel and it was making things act even wonkier.
