Can anyone shed any light on the things typically found in a kitchen (in terms of utensils)? Do you typically have to buy plates, mugs, etc.? What about kitchen appliances (kettles and what have you)?

I am with GEPIK as are several of my friends. Everyone's apartment is pretty much the same: 10 x 12. Clean and bright. The first two and a half years I lived in a 10 x 10. It was a big adjustment to what I was used to but I looked on the internet for small space decorating ideas, and it ended up being okay. I also slept on a yo that I could roll up during the day and use for a couch for when friends came over.

Kitchen utensils? My kitchen was pretty sparse when I showed up, but I headed down to the dollar store places with the $300 GEPIK gives and bought what I needed.

Don't be turned off by a small place. I know my school looked immediately for a larger place for me when I voiced that I wanted one, and my friend's school asks her every year if she is happy with her's. My school had never actually seen my apartment (they trusted a real estate agent) so they didn't know how tiny it was. If you are concerned at all upon arrival, invite your coordinator over and talk about it. If they can do something about it, they probably will. But smaller apts are the norm here.

i got a sink, a gas stove with 2 burners, and several cabinets. beyond that there were 2 small pans, 1 pot, 2 mugs, 2 small bowls, and 2 big bowls. no silverware or plates. this was with a housing arrangement advertised as "fully furnished."

The bed at EPIK orientation feels like it's made of stone. I'm praying the bed in my apt is a little softer Sad

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya. If not, those padding things aren't that bad.
