When i was a kid, a friend of mine had a pet budgie (parrot) in a cage. For me, it was a toss up between distress at seeing the poor thing always locked up, and fascination for seeing it fluttering around and doing its own thing. It was always interesting to see it preen and prance in front of the mirror....
And now i have the pleasure of seeing the same activity on a bigger scale. I work in an office as the sole foreigner with korean co-workers too scared to talk to me in case i might speak english. As every office should have, there is a large mirror right at the front door. And without fail, every man woman and bespectacled computer engineering student entering or leaving through the door has to primp and preen. The office manager, in his silver suit, is particularly fond of peering deep into his own eyes as he is barking orders on his mobile phone.
Just for fun, i want to replace it with one of those sideshow distortion mirrors and hear the astonished aghast cries from all who peer within..... |

It's true.
No Korean can resist a mirror.
They STILL don't talk to you?
You're STILL the only foreigner?
Jeez, I would never want to go back to that nightmarish situation.
You should record some video footage of them, call it a cultural difference, of them primping in the mirror.
I think another poster a long time ago put it best when he was comparing Korea and Thailand.
He said, "Back in Thailand, I would be sitting near the window of Starbucks, and Thai girls would actually walk by the window and check me out."
He went on to say, "Here in Korea, when I sit near the window of Starbucks, Korean girls walk by and check THEMSELVES out in the window's reflection, primping, etc."
That just about sums it up. |

My favourite is the Korean women who block the sink in public bathrooms so I can't get to it while they can flip their hair, do their make up, examine themselves ad infinitum, and STILL don't wash their hands! Thank god that's not my Korean coworkers! |

There ain't no difference between the men and women here in that regard......
Back when i was doing hapkido, the master (supposedly a tough guy ex-tank driver/soldier) would break everybody off as sparring partners and then fluff his hair in the full length mirror as the students all exchanged kicks... |
