if you're concerned about wasting power, just do other things while your computer is running so you don't feel that you're wasting it.
try googling for CPU crunching things like SETI, etc. Your CPU can help towards finding cures for cancer, AIDS, etc. |

Not quite true.
Even though I was a keen SETI cruncher for 7 years (over a million WU's done) I turned it off recently in an effort to save on electricity. A bit of research on the net showed me that a computer running at 100% will use a lot more power than one on idle.
I did a rough calculation and estimated that SETI (24/7 @ 100%) was costing me about $10 a month.
But I do applaud anyone willing to pay a few dollars more for running one or a few of the various distributed computing programs. |
