|
|
I just installed it on my main desktop. Got the free RC copy that is good until June 2010.
Its faster than Vista, and sleeker. My hard drive is definitely more idle. As I am typing this, it is making zero noise. With Vista there was always SOMETHING accessing the drive (system idle processes, windows search indexing, etc...)
So far all software I have is running just fine. I like the fact that I can go to websites and not have to "install activeX" tab. I went to www.congnamul.com and the map loaded instantly.
The Control Panel has been stripped down. I like the new Aero features.
Everything except my Webcam was recognized instantly during the install. Kinda ironic since I have a Microsoft webcam. The automatic driver search didn't pull up an drivers for it. But, when I went to Microsoft's website, they had the webcam software available for download, Windows 7 version.
All in all, its turning out to be Microsoft's best OS yet. |

Did you do an upgrade from Vista or a clean install? Also, did you save all your drivers beforehand? I ask this because I'm planning on doing a clean install on a laptop with XP. It's an older HP with 1GB RAM, a 100GB harddrive and a 1.86 hertz Centrino chip. I'll save all my drivers on a stick before I reformat.
MS says 1 GB RAM is enough for Windows 7. Of course more is better, but I wonder if my specs are ok? |

I doubt you'll get a real snappy-fast experience, but it should just about work.

You don't need to do that. Just check before you reformat that the HP website laptop support section has the newest drivers for your laptop. Assuming they do, then reformat, then install OS, then install updated drivers from HP website.
Don't worry. The internet works right after a fresh install.
Still, though. My advice to any one with an older laptop or underpowered laptop would be to stick with XP.
Windows 7 does not have a magic wand which makes it fast on older computers. |

I ran a demo of Windows 7 on a single-core Pentium 4 with a 2.8 ghz processor. I don't think Vista could have handled it. |

Running an OS is more about the amount and speed of the RAM. Less about the CPU.
Also, running Vista with the 'Aero' eye candy on needed some decent GPU power. A lot of people didn't have so they got Vista in blocky 'Basic' style which looked worse than normal XP.
It would seem to me that W7 is Vista just stripped back a bit. MS haven't really added, they've taken away. But that's what the users wanted. Vista features like search indexing and UAC were stuff the average user couldn't understand the need for. So they've gone.
There has been a little tweaking too.......
http://gizmodo.com/5234169/why-windows-7-is-snappier-than-vista
But nothing major.
Some people really rock from one extreme to another. "Vista is the worst! It's horrible!! It's a POS!!!!........Win 7 is wonderful! It's beautiful!! It's the best OS ever!!!"...........jeez!.....control that oscillation there!!
My final analysis is that when MS developed Vista, they tried too hard. They tried to make it the mother of all OS's........they put too many ingredients into the broth. In their enthusiasm they forgot that most people like simpler things. The average Joe prefers burger and fries to a 12-course meal with stuff in it he has never heard of.
I'm going over to Win 7 very soon, but I'll look fondly on my years with Vista.
Oh, and gaming is often seen as the true test for any system.
Guess what? Vista and Win 7 are identical for gaming. |

At the least you should stick your network drivers on something. Windows never provides a driver for my dell laptop, so any time I've formatted, I'd have been SOL without the the driver CD or the network drivers on a thumb drive. |

Thanks for the input. I may just take your advice Eamo and leave the XP alone and just do a clean XP install.
However, I do have Vista Home Premium (legit) on another computer and I'm planning on upgrading (legit) to Windows 7. This computer has 3GB RAM and 320 HD and Dual Core AMD Turion X2. (OK, I know what your thinking...but I only paid $550 for it brand new, ok?)
What do you think? Good idea or not? I know I can get if for free, but if the upgrade is really only $79 I don't mind. |

is there somewhere in Korea we can buy legit Windows 7 media for an upgrade price? I know some countries are getting stupid deals on it, but I hadn't seen Korea on the list.
Or anyone know where a Dell windows 7 OEM disk could be found? I'm sure if I had the disk it would just install and be activated instantly as is the way with OEMs.. |

Can't you just buy the upgrade online? |

I searched for windows 7 upgrade online, didn't turn up anything useful, just news stories about upgrade pricing.
Personally I'd prefer to get my hands on a dell DVD since I have a dell laptop and its much less messy |

If you want to upgrade to 7 from Vista, download the "Upgrade Advisor" and it will walk you through the process of getting the RC. Then, in October, you can buy the license.
As for me, I'm just going to wait until all the bugs are worked out. |

I'm using XP. Wouldn't touch vista with a 10 foot pole. Every experience I've had with it is terrible. Terrible firewall settings, all USB devices failing after sleep, randomly losing the internet connection because the network its been attached to for hours is suddenly "unknown".
no thanks.
I'll just see if I can get a hold of the Dell CD I think. |

Yea, I've heard of all those problems from Vista users but I've never experienced them myself. I got a new laptop in January with Vista and it's been fine, except for the stupid UAC! Disabled that pretty quickly! |
