I'm not a stamp collector but I have family members in the USA who are, so I keep an eye on new Korean stamps that come out. Many are just "run of the mill" but a new set came out this week (August 18, 2009) and you should see this sheet-

It's part of a series about Korean history and mythology and it's the best stamps I've seen issued by the Korean Post Office. The individual stamps cost 250 won, but you should buy a sheet, with 12 stamps, for 3,000 won. The sheet is pictured in the above link.

One thing to note about stamps like this- they don't usually last long. Collectors tend to buy these stamps so, if you like what you see, get a sheet or two the next time you're at the Post Office.

If you do collect stamps, I'll give you this warning-some Korean Post Offices don't hold new stamps until the official issue date. Once they get the new stamps they start to sell them- even if it's a week before the official issue date. Also, you may have to "shop around" to find some of the stamps that are issued in smaller lots. Oh, and every postal worker I've met in Korea has seemed thrilled to help a foreigner who collects stamps.

Nice, I do collect stamps. At least, my collection is at home.

It might help to know the Korean word for stamp: 우표

And if you're looking for postcards (you'd think they'd be everywhere, but I've only found some at the COEX), they are called 엽서

What??? Postcards are to be found everywhere? I must get out more. I must start reading. I am a bad teacher, I don't even read!

So they do have stamps! Every time I mail postcards and cards, they print out this white sticker. I've tried asking for stamps, but they still just print out the white sticker.

My family does collect stamps and they keep asking when will I learn how to say 'stamp' in Korean, so they can finally get some!

So I went to Kyobo...and what did I see? Photos that they call post cards, but the backsides don't have nice lines for the address or nothing. That's not a postcard!

OP,

Do any of the new stamps feature the supreme ruler of North Korea?

Those stamps are beautiful - I bought some yesterday to send to a friend
back home. I'm not sure if the post offices still do this or not, but a few years ago I bought a VERY nicely bound book featuring all of the stamps that were issued the previous year, complete with an explanation.
At that time they were published annually, but I'm not sure sure about now. Ask at a post office if a book like this will be sold next year or not.
I believe I paid around 40,000 Won for the book.
