I just signed for another year so I thought I'd spash out on a PS3 and a TV for my new pad.

Anyone out there bought one? They main thing stopping me at the moment is if the games are regional, like DVD's. Will I be able to play UK bought games when I take it home with me?

I asked some of the middle school kids at my hagwon about prices and they said about 350k, which seems cheap as chips, considering a PS3 back in England would be about 250-300 quid. I heard that Sony were introducing a new "slimline" Playstation, like they did with the PS2. Any gamers out there know about arrival dates here in Korea?

Thanks.

I've owned 2. PS3 games are not regional, in most cases, but PS2 games are I think (for those older blu-ray machines that run PS2 games). Blu-ray movies are (and the UK is a different region).

Yongsan sells PS3's at the best prices. I currently have the 40gb model, and like it. Not sure when the slim one comes to Korea.

Don't know how common mod chips are, but you could always try getting it modded so that if there are any problems with regions (like the DVDs) it will still play them.

I will try to help as best I can:
1. I bought a PS3 in Korea about 6 months ago at Yongsan. It was the ceramic white 80gig and at the time it cost around 400k, so I bet it's cheaper now.
2. All PS3 games are region free. The only 'catch' is, the online play can be region locked. For example, there is a game out in Asia called Demon's Souls, it is being released in the West in October. Those with the import copy will not be able to access the same server as those in the West because the networks are region locked.
3. Majority of blu-ray movies are region free (70% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_codes) the problem is according to that site Korea and the UK are in different regions so most, but maybe not all movies will work.
4. Unless a DVD is region 3 or region ALL, it will not work on your Korean PS3.
5. The PS3 slim will be 299 in Europe and 249 in the UK and be available in all the major markets in a month. there is no talk about it coming to Korea in the near future.
6. You cannot chip at PS3. No one has been able to crack it like that yet, and since it uses blu-ray, it makes it even more difficult.

+1

Also, do yourself a favour and go to the underground electronics market instead of buying from the guys in the main building (where the Subway is)... You'll save anywhere from 5-10% on average...

They just announced the slim version for $299 bucks. Wait for that. It's gonna hit store this Fall-Winter worldwide.

Never heard of a PS3 being modded.

Seems you guys are right. Just did a search and I guess there aren't any mods for PS3.
