it' funny cause it's true...by the way, this applies to all facets of life in korea (i.e. i'm the only person in the world!) and can explain the pushing and shoving to get on subways, buses, elevators, or up and down escalators, etc.
here's one that pisses me off to all. at an intersection where there is a traffic light and there is a left-turn lane and the traffic is backed up at a red light in the go-through lanes... there is always, without fail, drivers who will drive into the left-lane and go straight through the intersection while everyone (well, almost everyone) else waits at the red light. and if they can't go through the intersection because traffic on the other side is turning left through it, the driver will drive out into the intersection and back up into the front of queue. my wife always yells, "yahhhh" when this goes down.
i've sworn to carry my camera with me to take pictures of this occurence and show them to the police. i heard that you can get a small reward for this and the driver will get ticketed. |

sounds like a certain way to get a quick mil. even if the reward is only man won per picture.. may i suggest that you take lots of spare film with you even for a 30 minute trip if that is your plan of attack. |

yeah, got the digital camera with a bunch of memory cards. my plan now is to just stand at an intersection for a 30 minutes and take pictures of the general mayhem. i'm thinking a camcorder, which i don't have, might be more useful in this situation.
forgot to mention, my friend got a ticket for an illegal u-turn mailed to him. he said there was a photo included and that it was taken by another driver. |

Maybe if you formed some organization like "Protect the Korean Children from Early Death" then they might be more willing to listen to you. Of course, you would have to gain some publicity in order to be noticed. |

It's true that you can get a reward for photographing people doing illegal stuff with their cars. I remember reading about this a couple of years ago... Some guys were making quite a handsome profit (about 2 million or so)
The pedestrian crossing thing. Cars simply don't stop unless the crossing has lights. The crossing a damn menace for newbies; I almost got knocked over when I first arrived. Some years later, when I went back home, I found I was physically unable to start crossing at a pedestrian crossing until the car had come to a complete halt! |

Rule 195.424.135 Section A: Children shall not be placed in a restraining child protection seat. Ideally, all children should stand in the front passenger seat while throwing objects at the driver. |

Yes, a lot of drivers don't turn on their headlights. It'll be dusk and getting on well dark but there will be oncoming cars that are in stealth mode because, evidently, they want their headlight bulbs to last longer? Is this why, at red lights, they turn their headlights off until the light becomes green? AGGGHHHH! |

Have you ever heard of "Reset Syndrome"?
It's an emerging psychological condition that has to do with the way excessive computer game players respond to the real world.
Apparently computer game addicts fail to recognise the consequences of their actions in the world that's not part of a PC program.
In short- someone who spends 12 hours a day playing at being indestructable fails to take in the concept that the "play again" button doesn't flash up after a fatal car crash.
That's the only way I can explain what I see on Korean roads.

The funniest thing I've seen was a dog walking along on the sidewalk all by itself and then stopping at a crosswalk before trotting across and proceeding on the opposite sidewalk.
The dumbest thing I've ever seen was a foreigner hitchhiking. Does extending a thumb actually work? |

Today I saw two guys stop at the curb/kerb and deposit two empty cans of gatorade. The cans were just barely tall enough to get under the door as they shut it.
I've lived in Korea for 6 months; I've been a passenger in a car during two traffic accidents. First: Going to Incheon to fly home for Christmas. Bus and truck collide as we approached Seoul's toll gate. Second: My director was driving me to school. We stopped at an intersection with the intent to turn right as soon as traffic cleared. A man rear-ended us.
I lived in America for nearly 23 years; I've been a passenger/participant during a total of two traffic accidents. (I rear ended someone on a wet road; my dad and the car from across the street collided as we both backed out of our respective driveways.) |

I remember a few years ago during a heavy winter storm there was an hilarious article summarizing some of the traffic problems around the country. Apparently, out in Gangwon-do, an area that does get a lot of snow, a a certain road was either unpassable or very dangerous due to the snow and ice so the ccccops tried to place an officer at the offramp to the road to direct people away from it.
Well, as you might have imagined, people ignored the officer and too kthe road anyway. And as a result, as you might have imagined, a lot of people got their car stuck and ended up having to walk a long way or wait for help.
But yea, Koreans are awful drivers...

When you want to cross at a cross walk without lights make sure there is an old lady or someone with a child between you and the approaching cars. Most vehicles will invariably slow down. Probability of cars going straight through is greatly reduced. |

I have done more than 100,000Km on Korean roads - car and bike.
I have seen, more that once, cars stopped in the fast lane of a highway changing a tyre. No thought to pull over first ...
Cars parked in a fast lane, two wheels on the central reservation, people on the grass having a picnic.
General info:
First away from the lights is the one who gets smashed - seen it several times. I'm always second or third away.
Stop lights - dontcha know, red is just another shade of green in Korea. Just try asking someone what the yellow one is for. |
