Yea, I've heard of all those problems from Vista users but I've never experienced them myself. I got a new laptop in January with Vista and it's been fine, except for the stupid UAC! Disabled that pretty quickly! |
i've got a few friends who bought new laptops and it came with vista. I'll be happy when it is dead and buried. The randomly losing the internet for no good reason is extremely irritating. The sleep USB thing is bad because I'm sure MS made big deal about that not happening in vista (I was at one of their Vista Beta launch parties a few years ago)
and the firewall thing is stupid. If I hadn't studied network engineering I'd probably have had no idea what was wrong with it. I had a router at home, but it wasn't wireless. got a vista laptop that needed wireless. I had a FON WAP I got for free, so I plugged that into my router. The FON had its own DHCP pool so both desktop and laptop wound up on different subnets. I tried to do filesharing and it just wouldn't work.Vista could access the desktop, but I couldn't get back the other way. Apparently the firewall thought I was some 1337 hacker and disabled filesharing if the person trying to access it was coming from outside the subnet. Another home user who had a non-wireless router and just ran out to the local computer shop and grabbed a wireless access point would have found themselves in the same boat and probably beat their head against the wall for a long time over that. |

I just installed it on my main desktop. Got the free RC copy that is good until June 2010.
Its faster than Vista, and sleeker. My hard drive is definitely more idle. As I am typing this, it is making zero noise. With Vista there was always SOMETHING accessing the drive (system idle processes, windows search indexing, etc...)
So far all software I have is running just fine. I like the fact that I can go to websites and not have to "install activeX" tab. I went to www.congnamul.com and the map loaded instantly.
The Control Panel has been stripped down. I like the new Aero features.
Everything except my Webcam was recognized instantly during the install. Kinda ironic since I have a Microsoft webcam. The automatic driver search didn't pull up an drivers for it. But, when I went to Microsoft's website, they had the webcam software available for download, Windows 7 version.
All in all, its turning out to be Microsoft's best OS yet. |
Agreed. Windows 7 is quite solid. Although it seems the closer they emulate Mac OS X the better off they are. |

+1
Hilarious that Microsoft is still running with the brilliant idea of shutting down the OS from the "Start up" menu. Change that, and add some drivers to the package and then you have something.
In the meantime. |

I like Windows 7 a lot. The new taskbar and the small live thumbnails of currently running apps is a useful feature. I'm writing this on my new Macbook Pro (my mother gave me her old model in lieu of an upgrade) and I think W7 has improved on the OSX dock, so it is easier to tell which applications are running and quickly switch between them. |

There are fewer and fewer compelling reasons to switch to Windows 7 for me. Since SP2 for Vista, things are peachy. |

I think a fair benchmark would be comparing Vista pre-SP1 to Windows 7. Vista didn't get rock solid until after its first service pack.
For being an RTM/RC right now, Windows 7 is fantastic. I know a lot of people usually wait until the 1st service pack before upgrading their Windows. I'm sure Windows 7 SP1 would bring a lot of improvements and make things run more efficiently.
Do to the hardware now, and the price of computer components, I don't think memory usage/cpu usage is an issue anymore for OS's. Its less than $100 to get 4GB of ram. The midrange CPU's are in the $100 range. I remember back in the P4/Athlon XP days a midrange CPU was in the $200-$300 range. |

I just bought a laptop. It came with Vista. Do we get a free upgrade if the computer is new?
Also, I am taking a language course, and I need to be able to type in Arabic. How does one do that and support that? I saw something about Vista Ultimate. Anyone know what's the best way to type in word using another foreign language?
Thanks.... |

Depends on who and where you bought it.
Dell has a free upgrade program for any machine bought from June or July 26 to Dec 31st. You'd have to see if the place you bought it has a free upgrade program. |
