| Does anyone know if your credit rating in the states has effect on your credit rating in Korea or Japan? |

Weird idea here.
Pay cash. You aren't here to buy lots of things .
A few things here and there are ok .
Credit here is different than in the US . |

| I plan to move to both Korea and Japan permanently, Japan as early as next year. I'm wondering more about Japan, but I know this isn't a Japan forum, so just thought I'd ask about both. Anyone have experiences with credit here? For example, if you apply for a credit card here, do they look up your U.S. credit? |

From what I have heard from lurking around this forum for a couple years, there is no link between credit ratings in other countries. You could have stellar credit back home, it means jack crap here.
Of course, you could have stellar credit here, and it still wouldn't mean crap because you are a foreigner.
Hell, you could be a Millionaire, and banks STILL wouldn't give you credit cards. |

Pretty much. Every country has their own credit rating agencies. So unless a bank or someone else specifically looks up your credit rating back home, it's meaningless. Most of the time they don't do that to my knowledge; it's your in-country credit rating that counts. |

| KEB will issue a VISA card based upon your address of all things or at least that is what they did in my wife's case. I thought it was kind of strange way to do business but certainly didn't argue with them. |

Are you sure about that? Anyone who rolls up in a Lambo and a big sack of cash will NOT get a KEB Credit card. Why? Because you are a foriegner and you DON'T work for a global 500 company, University, or have been employed by the same Public School for over 2 years.
The only credit card YOU would get is a Secured Card. The same card you give back home to people with a crap credit record.
I know of one guy with 30 million won in his KEB account. He's been in Korea for over 5 years. He applied for a KEB Credit Card, wiith a credit limit of 2 million Won. He was denied because he had recently changed jobs and he wasn't working for the same school for over 2 years. He's banked at KEB for 5 years. He showed them the 30 mil he's saved up, as will as his account history of having paychecks deposited every month for 5 years.
He was DENIED.
I know foriegners who have gone to Car Dealerships with CASH to buy a car, and the dealers would refuse to sell the car unless it was under the Korean Wife/Husband's name. |
