|
|
This past weekend one of my female friends was at a club in Seoul. She ended up going back to a "love motel" with a Korean man. After they fooled around a bit she decided she had enough and tried to leave; he attempted to hold her down but she managed to run to the door. He punched her twice in the face bloodying her nose and giving her a black eye. Scared and disoriented she ran out of the room, yelled to the reception clerk that the man in her room was crazy and hightailed it home. She doesn't remember the room number but thinks she may have his phone number in her phone. Has anyone had a similar experience or can offer advice on how to proceed? Is there even a point in reporting this? Thoughtful response much appreciated.
No judgemental [Mod Edit] need respond, thanks. |

I'm sorry but if it's so disturbing then why are you telling people on an internet forum about what happened?
And it's a well known fact that women often lie about this type of stuff she is just guilty that she slept with a man she later realised wasn't that attractive. |

Implied consent...simply by going to the love hotel...she will not "win."
She went freely to a love hotel which the hotel clerk will tell the cops.
She had a few drinks which will not also go in her favor.
The guy can claim....."I was to drunk...I don't remember anything or I was defending myself after she attacked me or we had rough sex or something else."
If this friend of yours is western looking...she will be viewed as a hooker or easy lay by the cops
if she is korean....same thing applies....
another words, nothing she can do...she might find a cop that will want to help her...but....it'll be a battle.
Hundreds of korean women are raped everyday in korea and nothing happens to the rapists'.
Cops or some womens help group might go through the motions of filing charges, etc. but in the end...nothing of any serious consequence will happen to her attacker.
If she is non korean and went to a love hotel with a korean...looks bad for her....she brought it on herself is how it will be viewed. |

Unfortuneatly, in this country, if a girl goes back to your room or apt, etc it means she is going to have sex with you. Otherwise she won't go. So, I am sorry, your friend is prob out of luck. Never go to a room with a man unless you are going all the way. The authorities will question why she went there in the first place and should have known better. Just the Korean thinking. |

andz22 - I said no judgemantal [Mod Edit]. I had to post some details so people who would have a picture of the incident before offering up their opinion. And if you truly believe that she in any way had it coming or is lying, then you need a lot of professional psychological help. Good luck to you, you will need it. |

Hold on the misogynistic attitude.
I agree that she took the wrong decision, but entering a love hotel and then pulling out on the deal does not equate to being manhandled.
You are looking for excuses for that guy, but you know well enough there is no excuse for such behavior. |

Hitting a woman is rarely acceptable and the guy in question is a bad sort. But if your friend (or any woman) goes to a freakin motel with a guy she just met, she should be extra cautious. Even a timid reasonable guy is expecting sex in that situation, let alone a violent psychotic guy.
The police would probably tell your friend not to go to motels with guys you met 20 minutes before. |

Heck, we have taxi drivers raping foreign women and not being prosecuted.... you think Korean authorities are going to do something about a guy she went to a motel with? |

Am I missing something here? No where in the op does it say she was raped. She was physically assaulted when trying to leave.
I can understand how rape might be a hard thing to prove after going to a love hotel with a stranger, but in Korea does going to a love hotel with a guy naturally entail getting a few shots to the face? Assault is assault, it doesn't matter where it occured.
I hope your friend was aware enough to take some pictures of herself after the assault and if she still has this man's phone number and can track him down, maybe something can be done. |

Legally, she doesn't have a great chance. If you want to track down this guy and out his face into a brick wall, that would be the closest thing to justice that she'll get.
If you go that route, be careful not to be spotted. |

Unfortunately, I think this is going to be a 'lesson learned' type of experience. Unless the guy paid with his credit card and the motel is willing to give up the information (unlikely), I highly doubt the police will do anything or even write up a report.
Lesson learned everyone, don't go home with randoms. |

Rape Victim Speaks Out
By Adam Walsh, The Korea Herald (August 12, 2009)

... The people at the center "were understanding and kind, yet very professional. They stayed with me while I slept and even though they couldn't speak very much English, it was very comforting to have someone there," stated Brouard....
On Monday July 13, a suspect was arrested after being identified by the police through CCTV surveillance....
Not wanting to take "blood money" Brouard was forced to fundraise in order to get enough money for a plane ticket home,...
"Blood money" refers to "hapuigeum" - monetary compensation paid by the offender to the victim of a crime to reduce or eliminate the application of other punishment. It is a common practice in Korea and is often brokered by the police....
Both Brouard and Lee hope that this case will develop a greater awareness of the issue of sexual assault and the victims. |

The Seoul High Court yesterday overturned the conviction by a lower court of a 49-year old taxi driver who had been charged with the rape of a 19-year old U.S. female soldier.
The appeals court ruled that the woman had shown no evidence of having refused the man's advances, and that he used "not enough violence to constitute rape." |
