A couple a years ago there was a big issue of teachers not receiving their severance pay and airfare from Masan public schools; so it had happened. The following letter illustrates that case. I have quoted it from my e-mail box.
Quote: |
Be wary of working for public schools in Masan.
We, Masan 2007 public school teachers, are writing to make all prospective teachers aware of what we have experienced in the city of Masan this year. In the standard English Program In Korea (EPIK) contract which covers most public school teachers in Korea, there is a requirement to pay foreign teachers an extra months severance pay when they successfully complete their contract and also to provide a free return airfare, whether the teacher has elected to remain with the school, or not, after finishing their first contract. Unfortunately, in early 2008, when many teachers contracts finished, the Masan Office of Education did neither of these things (the Office of Education insisted teachers pay for their own airfares and be reimbursed. This is not in the EPIK contract and thus is illegal) and only about half of the foreign teachers in Masan received their money on time. After more than a month of waiting, the remaining teachers decided to initiate a letter and email writing campaign together to the Masan Office of Education and the EPIK office in Seoul. Eventually, this campaign had the desired affect, and those teachers who had not been paid were paid, with the last teacher receiving their money 2 months after they should have been paid.
NB - Remember, while you may be supervised day to day by your school, the Office of Education is the body with whom you have actually signed your contract, and so they administer your contract, have authority over your school and may make decisions that directly affect you.
Signed

I had no problem with the same Office of Education as Masan as I received all my cash on my last day. I was signing on for a second year so maybe that is why. They have been above board on all cash dealings so I have no reason to suspect that they will cheap me when I finish up soon. |

Yes, I got everything, although it was at the absolute last second (Friday afternoon of my last day). |

Can anyone give issues about SMOE? Did they pay on the last day of the contract into your bank (Korean) account? |

I finished a GEPIK contract at the end of Nov.2008. They paid my airfare and last month's salary before I left. However, they said they would pay my severance and apartment deposit refund (the apt. was inspected and found OK before I left) within a month. In reality, it was over two months, after I had a couple former co-teachers call them and I sent numerous e-mails threatening action from the Labor Board. If you'd like specifics re: the school, please e-mail me at <[email protected]>. I don't have enough posts to PM. |

I'm in the process of finishing and having issues getting my severance and air money despite already discussing these matters in early July and getting an approval to be paid on payday, August 25th. Not only from my school, but also the county district officer stated she contacted the provincial office for approval and it was a go, but now they act like they know nothing of such matters. Now they are acting like they don't know of such pays and state they need more time to determine if I'm eligible for severance and airfare by contacting the higher ups. I was at this EPIK job for 15 months.
It's apparant to me that corruption exists in PS offices. They probably already spent the money or the boss man is holding it from me. It will take an act of congress from the powers that be above for them to pay me.
I'll keep you posted as to what happens. |

Im not sure how much this will help, but a friend gave me this number for EPIK and said they would ensure the school paid all money due before you leave the country - 02 3668 1396
I asked this morning to my school and they said I would get it all on the morning of my last day - severance, housing deposit, airfare and final pay |

I was under GEPIK for my last contract. I received my final pay within a week but my housing deposit/severence pay didn't come till about a month later. I wasn't going home so I wasn't entitled to an airfare but the other NT at my school was reimbursed for his airfare before he left.
So yeah, got it all back no problem but they took their sweet time in my case to get it done. |
