THE scene has been set for a race between several Middle Eastern countries to develop a nuclear program after Saudi Arabia yesterday revealed its intention to push ahead with a nuclear industry.
Saudi Arabian Minister for Water and Electricity Abdullah al-Hosain revealed that the country was developing its first nuclear power plant.

This is going to start making things interesting in the middle east. If the saudi's get the bomb and a decent delivery system, it will be interesting to see the extent that the hardliners go to take control.
It may be that the kingdom simply wants a renewable energy source, but considering that it looks like Iran will have the weapons, I would not be surprised if they are making sure the sunni's keep the power in the middle east.
I am surprised that they haven't simply bought one from pakistan before now though. |

You know, I really thought that the idea of S.A. wanting to get a nuclear reactor might have meant something to the political (students) on this board.
I am surprised that not one person has mentioned on the fact that not one country in the middle east or actually anywhere else for that matter except for the USA and maybe Russia has ever used thier nuclear reactor for simply energy reasons.
All nations except the original two (and the S.U. stole thier ideas from the US) used the domestic program to either make a weapons program or gain the knowledge to make one.
Even Japan is supposed to have a 6 month window to produce one if they really needed too.
Isn't the coincidence that a few weeks after a report from a couple of intelligence organisations accepting that they can't stop Iran from producing nukes from thier domestic program, the Saudi's decide they now need a domestic nuclear energy program.
I mean the Saudi's. Seriously.
Oh well, it should be fun in the future. |

The positions you articulate here sound very naive to my ears.
Israel's defensive needs, India and Pakistan's rivalry, as well as Tehran's current regional ambitions, set the stage for a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, cumulatively, decades ago, Summer Wine. Saudi Arabia, like others in the region, I suspect, has apparently taken steps to respond to this and defend itself against a potentially nuclear-armed Iran.
We will soon see another MAD tactical situation there, I am afraid. |

Agreed. They will likely soon do themselves in -- perhaps in our lifetimes, Mises. Allāhu Akbar. |

Thank you for your response. Accept that I am naive to certain ideals and please explain further as to my mistakes.
I am interested in learning more. |

Okay. "Saudis" and "Sunnis" don't require an apostrophe. |

Do you think I have a year or two to go and earn the big bucks teaching there before this happens?

They do when it indicates possession.
