Hiya folks.

So I really really want to get a helicopter pilot's licence...

Is it possible to do it here? I have tried Osan airbase, but they won't even speak to me at the gates, nevermind let me through.

Ideally this would be done at a private school.
Military guys, I know it would be impossible to do this sort of thing on US airbases, but any reference or guidance would be

Well, there might be someone out there who knows more about this than I, but here goes...

I worked with an ex-chopper pilot a few years ago. I was (sort of) interested in learning to fly. I asked him how a civilian could go about getting helicopter instruction.

He basically said that it was so prohibitively expensive, that the average civilian couldn't afford it. The best route, he said, was to join the military and get them to teach you.

I don't know about helicopter training, but the classes for a private plane license is about $10,000 in Canada for 45 hrs of flight time and classes. I'd venture a guess that helicopter training is even more.

VincentMiser: Out of curiosity, how much does it cost? Does having that license permit you to buy a helicopter and fly around? This is intriguing...

xCustomx: Does that license, for 37K, give you access to commerical pilot jobs? Or is there more to it? This too, is intriguing...

Can't help with helicopters ...
but, if you are interested in fixed-wing SE ultralight you can get that license in Korea. However, it is not ICAO regulated so the theory exam is in Korean.

Previous exp (or other countries PPL is not recognized) so you have to do the 20 hours min with instructor, theory exam, 5 hours solo, then flight test before license issue from the Ministry of Transport. You can then fly solo, and carry passengers, in one of the designated areas.

You can convert the Korean license to sports license out of country or use it to fly OS in that category since the license is issued in Korean and English with photo ID and all the rest of it.

I have a PPL in my home country and just wanted to keep flying in the ROK, so this was the cheapest and fastest way to do it.

So I guess it is out of the question to do it here in ROK? I want to do a PPL with sights on doing the CPL. But if the exams are in Korean... makes it a little difficult.

cdninkorea: In my country a CPL would cost the equivalent of around 30 million won. Fuel prices change all the time so it's difficult to get a fixed price - anytime. Thats for a heli. Fixed wing, about half that.

There are U.S. reserve stations here in Korea.

I'm sure with your skill set you could join with no problem and get paid for training/serving. However, you'd be first to go to war.
