|
|
So I am teaching in the after school program in a public school. Hours are roughly 1-5. they have asked me to do a few shady things which I have refused. Now I am coming to find out that this job may be possibly illegal!
Please any thoughts knowledge would be helpful.
Plus I havent met any other foreigner who has this job. Is it common or not. what have I gotten myself into?
thanks~ ahead of time~ |

Need some more details buddy. Is this job your only job or is this an extra job. Like do you work at a hagwon then in the afternoon you do the after school classes at a public school. Or is this extra classes on top of regualr public school hours. Who are you working for - a school, a hagwon owner, recruiter, etc
It sounds like a little you are being farmed/pimped out. Many schools try and do this with their teachers. At times they have only so many hours at one school (usually the one they own) and then they try and farm out the teacher to other schools. The school makes profit on you teaching ( its business model for good or for bad). So in the morning you work at a public school in the afternoon you work at a hagwon. This can be legal if the proper paper work is done. You need to tell and get permission for immigration to teach. But at times many school/owners just farm out the teacher with the idea of if immi does not know it does not hurt them.
Also illegal how - visa wise? Do you have permission to work at the location you are teaching.
Good Luck. |

I'm guessing you're working at a public school, who is your sponsor, but there's an agency in the school running the show. Do you have the double bank book thing? If so, then yeah, it's illegal.
Legally private companies can't operate and profit in public schools; after school programs are legal only if they are run by the school with no other agency or company involved.
However, it's one of the many laws that get flouted regularly and go unenforced. If you like working there, get paid and get paid on time, I wouldn't fret. I did the same thing for a year, made good money, and never had any serious problems. |

We dont have a double bank account, we actually only have one. (we being my husband and I) But yes we work for a company that is hired by the school to teach English. Our company def makes a profit. We only teach at our school and have signed a contract with the school. But we are paid by the company. (we dont work in the morning or for a hagwon)
One of the managers said they have a non profit business name and that enables them to have the after school program.
hmmm anyone else have any thoughts?? |

After what's happened with the canceling of 100 SMOE public school jobs just 3 days before teachers were to fly over, and SMOE saying they over-hired on purpose, I'd have to say that yes... public schools are sketchy. |

Those public school ones pretend to be all about education when they're all about profit and loopholes to avoid tax and the such.
I prefer hagwons. They're all about profit too, but they don't try to hide their motivations. |

I was recently directly hired by a school for an "after-school" PS position, but the contract is the standard GEPIK one. There are absolutely no differences between the contract the school gave me and any other GEPIK contract - the hours are even the same as your standard PS position (8:40-4:40). I also haven't seen any indications that a separate agency is involved, and the school hasn't asked me to sign anything else. Should I still be a bit concerned? |

I'm actually trying to get an afterschool public school position. The hours sound really nice and the pay seems good also. What kind of illegal stuff did the school ask you to do OP? |

we had a dreadful employee--a real piece of work, far and above the worst "teacher" we've ever hired--who quit 6 months into his contract to take an after-school gig in lieu of full-time work. he claimed it was lucrative, but i never saw the contract.
just as well. saved us the trouble of firing him. |

Okay, I'll bite. If he was so dreadful, why did you keep him around for that long??? |

not all of them. I have a contract with GEPIK, and work my contracted class hours in the mornings, which gets me my base pay. Then the school has given me 3 different extra classes to teach. An elite class (Monday and Wednesday afternoon), a mixed ability class (babysitting on a tuesday and thursday), and a parents class (on a friday afternoon). Each of these classes is for 90 minutes. Because of these extra classes, i get an extra 1.2 million a month on top of my base, and it's paid, by my school, in to the same account i always use. i wouldn't consider that being screwed over.
Usually, as a rule, if you have to ask whther or not you're being screwed -then you probably are. |

I remember doing an interview with some guy in person 2-3 months back and he told me he'd hire me but its a first come first serve thing, whoever has all the paper work the soonest can come over, because they already over hired and I was an over hired person. Didn't sound too promising when he told me that. |

We couldn't find anyone (more proof that it's an employee's market)! We tried for several months, but there was always some problem...someone wasn't available right away, or they interviewed TERRIBLY...maybe they didn't want to work POLY hours...?
He was just the worst, though. Horrible. |

i agree especially since your overtime pays 40000 won an hour. |
