Kind of a strange scenario...

I got a University job and the hiring guy said I could get an E1.. He gave me all the paperwork for E1. As I left the office I got a phone call from a new kyopo teacher (who was sitting at his desk) who was speaking on his behalf, as her english is better (although his english is fine).. She said I'd have to apply for E2, as I don't have a master's degree...But i have the paperwork for E1 and would prefer it.

Several days later I went back to his office to give him some other documents and he said, speaking frankly, that other teachers with BA's had applied and gotten E1's this semester.

So I left feeling great. 4 days later, today, he emails me to say he'd like to go with me to apply for an E2, and that he gave me the wrong information (about E1)..

All of which has raised all my red flags..

I'd trying to figure out why the guy is trying to get me on an E2! Easier to terminate if they don't like me??

Something seems strange. I don't think you can teach at a university with an E2 visa. Unless ... well .. is the position for an academy
that is owned by a university? Or will you be teaching classes on a
university campus AND at an academy owned by the university? Even
in this case though, I don't think it's possible.

Check with immigration yourself as to whether or not you can indeed teach at a university on an E2 visa. And just to be safe, have a Korean
friend call them and confirm what they tell you.

We have several E2's working at our univ. Both in the English dept. and elsewhere.

I teach at a provincial university on an E-2 visa. It just means they get to examine your teeth more, so to speak.

actually, after more thinking .. and rereading my bosses email.. HE wants to go to immigration with my documents, without me. Now I'm thinking he wants to check the validity of my documents with the immigration guy. Maybe have the immigration open up my sealed transcript to check grades?? Is that possible?

Or, he figured he can get the process done faster, as I'm one week into teaching without a visa as I'm watiing for police check from canada.

any guesses?

And what does "check your teeth more, hope you flossed" mean??

You know that you are teaching illegally, right? You seem to be way too paranoid about him looking at your transcripts. Low GPA? Laughing

I wouldn't worry about whether you have an E-2 or E-1 if I were you; at least you have a job. Do you have to teach any camps?

no camps, and it's a great job. My girlfriend thinks he just wants another gander at my diploma, which is legit. My transcript blows and I haven't shown them a copy of it so it would be a fresh look at some bad grades if he gets the immigration guy to open it.

My girlfriend also thinks i'm paranoid, but you got to admit that him going alone to immigration is really strange.. I've had a korean person come with me to immgration to help me in past jobs..

According to a couple of websites I scanned through, the requirements for an E1 and E2 are the same; both require only a bachelors degree. However, the E1 is used for universities and gives you higher status. I don't understand why your university purposely wants to give you an E2 instead of an E1. Maybe they are conspiring to assassinate your self esteem... Laughing

yeah, they were out to show me up ever since they saw my US university experience.. They rejected ALL of my US work experience which would have given me higher pay. They found some BS rule, as I was taking 1 online course at the time (work study experience not accepted).

If you've been working for a week already without a visa, then the school can be fined for hiring you illegally. My guess is the guy wants to make sure they don't question you and you spill the beans, get them fined and out of a teacher, and you possibly deported.
Koreans are much more disorganized than they are cheating bastards. It's easy to forget that, but it's not helpful to assume they are the latter just because something's different than the last time.
