I've been having this problem with my compaq laptop since june where i'm working and suddenly it shuts off for no reason. chatted with their tech support back then and they told me to unplug take out the bat and press the power button for 30 sec to diffuse the static electricity built up in the computer, plug back in and go. it does work but the problem has become more frequent and its not an overheating problem, had the computer on for 15 min this morning when it happened, so i took it to the hp/compaq service center in yongsan yesterday to have them check it. all they did was clean the fan but then they told me the problem was with a bearing in the fan and they couldnt fix it.
question couldnt they or is it possible just to replace the fan unit in the laptop or am i just condemmed to having this problem get worse to a point where i just need to get a new notebook or netbook? |

| The fan/heatsink assembly in a notebook should be replaceable. |

Not overheating?
So why did Compaq A/S center say the problem was a bearing in the fan.
Email Compaq in the USA and ask if the fan on the CPU is replaceable.
Is the case hot to touch?
On for 15 mins then shutting down sounds like a classic overheating problem. textbook. |

i have no idea why they said that. i'm going to 1) try and chat again with compaq usa and see if its replaceable and 2) take this computer to isoulutions in itaewon and see if he can replace the fan
i thought it might be overheating but why after i press the power button for like 30 seconds after it shuts off and i'm talking like a minute after it shuts off it starts up fine?
its a 4 year old laptop that frankly has been acting real sluggish lately, been thinking about getting a netbook anyhow if i can get a good price on one here. problem is between the wife and i we need 2 computers. any advice on getting one here with an english operating system and wifi? |

An overheated CPU can cool down enough in just one minute after power off to be able to start again. Once the volts aren't running through it, it cools down mighty quick.
4 years old? Probably not worth fixing. Treat yourself to a new one. I know you got the cash!!
My advice to anyone in Korea wanting a new laptop is to wait until you're traveling to an English speaking country. Buy there. It will likely be cheaper and have a full suite of English software. Plus, most of the laptop manufacturers now have international warranties. So you can go to the respective A/S center in Korea (read, Yongsan) to get it fixed if needs be. |

yeah i'd like to get a netbook since lugging this thing back to the states this winter isnt fun. was pricing netbooks in the states and they are cheap. i wonder if ordering from best buy/amazon having it sent to my fathers place in fla and having him send it on to us would be worth the price difference and the customs hassle.
i'll see what the repair shop says about a fan etc and if its worth to get it fixed so we can make it home thing is i'm not sure when we will be getting home it may not be this winter |
