i've never taken a flight this long before. how do you handle it, any tips? is it true that air Canada gives free drinks on international flights? how many do you get? is there a good medication you can take to just zonk out.

Drinks are part of the ticket cost, they're not free.

Twiddle your thumbs. Look at them. Read the inflight magazine. Twiddle your thumbs again. Look stupidly around. Stand around the toilet for hours and make the other passengers nervous. Blather on endlessly about Korea with the Pakistani man next to you. Cause the baby to cry in the seat behind you. Smile stupidly as others give you the evil eye. Twiddle your thumbs.

The seat back TVs on Air Canada have tv shows, I found that helped pass the time. Can't go wrong with Arrested Development or Pilot Guides.

Bring a book, mp3 player, magazines.

You can take prescription meds but I recommend Calms Forte - it's herbal, you can get it at health food stores, and three of those will keep you asleep or super chill for at least half the flight.

And yes, the drinks are included in the price of the flight, so I'd recommend white wine. That always manages to put me to sleep, if I'm trying to sleep.

I would recommend NOT trying to just sleep through a lot of it. You'll likely land at night and be wide awake from all that sleeping, and you still have jet lag to deal with.

Try this: before you take off, set your watch to Korean time. Make sure you know if it's AM or PM. Then, try to match your sleep or awake schedule to your watch. So, when it's 11pm Korean time, try to knock out for a stretch. Even if it's daylight outside your plane. Then When 8am rolls around, open a book, your computer, mp3, or watch the TV. I flew Korean Air coming over and they had TON'S of movies and TV shows, plus video games. I seriously could've watched TV and played games the entire time and not have watched or played something twice. It was ridiculous the amount of media those trans-Pacific Korean Air flights have.

Anyways, that's what I'd suggest. If you're adjusting to Korean time while on the flight, it helps once you land with the jet lag. My friend tried it and after one good nights sleep, he felt fine. It took me a day or two. Given that most people get jet lag for a week or more, a day is like nothing.

Also, bring snacks. You can get bags of peanuts or trail mix type stuff on the plane, but that's not gonna be enough between meals. So pack food thats not going to spoil, is dry, and wont smell.

As long as you have enough things to keep you busy, the time really will pass by. Say you sleep for 6 hours (broken up of course), watch a movie or 2. Read a couple chapters in a good book. Take a stroll around the cabin to stretch your legs. Have the meals they provide. Spend a while in bathroom freshening up (perhaps bring and extra shirt and deodorant), next thing you know, you'll be starting your decent in no time..... then the real "fun" begins Wink

Contrary to what the above poster said, I recommend sleeping. I've traveled to Seoul from New York 4 times so far and went bonkers the first couple of times trying to keep myself busy during the 14 1/2 hour flight. That's a lot of time to kill sitting in the same chair! Worst of all, I was exhausted beyond belief because I left at night in New York and arrived early morning in Korea. I recommend getting one of those neck pillows and popping a couple of melatonin if you can't fall asleep. The jet lag didn't last me more than a day or two.

Movie night!!!!!

I watch movies and documentaries one after another until touch down! I also take advantage of the beer cart (partly because I'm scared of flying and it calms me down).

If you see a white chick drinking cans of Hite and not sleeping a wink for the 14 hour flight, chances are it's me.

Meh, to each his own I guess. Everybody's body is different. If I sleep too much on long flights, I feel like hell when I land. I try to just treat it like a normal day. At school I'm either sitting at my desk, sitting in the office, sitting at lunch, sitting on a bus, sitting on a train, sitting in a taxi. So, when you think about it, your activity isn't all that much different, just the view never changes.

OP, just try whatever works best for you. Take some stuff to keep you busy and take some sleep aids to just knock you out the whole time. That way if one isn't working, just do the other.

That's correct. You typically leave at night and arrive super early Korea time so take a sleeping pill along, avoid alcohol, and drink all the free water and juice you can get when you are awake. If leaving in the morning US time, then you arrive in Korea in the late afternoon or evening which is better where you just go get settled into a room or your new apartment and then take a sleep. It's very difficult to sleep on airplanes as it takes a sleeping pill just to make me get 4 to 6 hours in. It's a very long sit down ride in cramped conditions. Just the danged seats don't go back enough nor are they anything close to a recliner chair in your living room unless going business class. They are not even as good as many of Korea's seated buses where the left side is single row with 2 rows on the right of big plush comfy seats. Planes are like a huge standard seated bus with wings so you have to grin and bear it not sitting up front in luxurious comfort. I had always hoped I would be upgraded to B class, but never got that. You get a big screen, a big seat that goes into a bed in a high tech pod like thing offering no elbow to elbow boloney, plenty of room for your laptop, power outlet, and attentive personal service for good food and drinks. Just hope you don't get squeezed in between over sized fellow passengers. I couldn't believe the size of a young Korean dude sitting next to me on a bus today making it very uncomfortable. Sweating and cramped with no room for your arms and shoulders forced closer togethor.

If not sleeping, IPOD, laptop, PSP, and printed materials can be very useful. Granola bars are a good travel partner. Too bad you can't bring on a big bottle of OJ and water like in the good ol' days, but you can usually get up for a walk to a galley for it any time. I had always wished they'd have an area where you could walk in circles around a bar serving drinks of your choice while mingling with people and listing to good music. You will be very thirsty and do need water depite not being a bit hot and sweaty.
