Just wondering what's the best I can expect in a gaming rig here.

In the UK I built loads of computers for myself and ones that I sold on.

In Korea I feel completely out of the market, the shops I do see selling pcs always have crappy low-lower mid graphics cards and the bottom end cpus.

Are there any korean online companies making decent gaming rigs.

At the moment I would like a mid level rig that I intend to sell on if I leave in a year.

what can I get for 700,000 - 1,500,000? Any suggestions. (not including a monitor.)

Priorities in this order are gpu (I would like one of the latest upper mid to higher end gpus; I guess amd will give me more bang per buck these days), cpu (I don't think its possible, but quad core would be nice), ram, hdd, psu, case/extras.

Are there any really good reputable online gaming rig companies here like back home?

I don't know about online, but if you're in or near seoul, go to Yongsan. There's a big market about 5 minutes away from the station. In the market, they have a few companies that will build a computer for you. You just tell them the components you want, and they'll build it for you for 10,000won.

I bought a midrange computer that can handle most games which cost me 500k. The prices for their parts are higher than newegg, but not by much if you consider the exchange rate.

any particular companies in Yongsan you can recommend? This sounds like a good idea.

It's really down to if you want to go with the new Intel i7 cpu's or not.

You could probably build an i7 rig with a 300,000won graphics card for around 1.3mill.

I think I went to okoasis. From yongsan station, take the front exit and turn left. walk past the emart, and you should see stairs going under a freeway. go through the tunnel, and you'll be on the opposite side of the tracks as the station. there should be a big blue building in front of you and to the left. If you cross the street, you'll see an entrance to a building with a bunch of tables with computer parts on them. Go inside and wander through the maze until you see a big "room" with a long counter and lots of computer parts and cases on the left hand side.

Sorry I can't give better directions, but the market in there has so many twists and turns, and I'm surprised any of the employees are able to find their booth/stall/room every day.

To give you an idea of their prices, my wolfdale 7400 core 2 duo 2.8ghz cost 124000 and my ati his 4670 cost 108000.

Get the Intel i7. Don't settle for anything less.

ladies, answer the man's question!

OP, for a mil, you can build a gaming PC that will play most games out there. Allow me to elaborate:

Core 2 Quad
Geforce 280 series or the 4870's.
4 gigs of ddr3 ram

You're good to go for a mil. The momma board, etc. won't be nearly as expensive as the 3 things i mentioned above.

That's without monitor.

Where did you find ddr3 ram? I could only find dd2 when I went to the electronics market in Yongsan.

Also, does xp sp3 support ddr3? (I know this is a n00b question, but my computer knowledge is pretty limited.)

You have to go the back area of the yongsan district. Best place to find ddr3 is on danawa.com

DDR3 is everywhere now, bit it is still comparatively expensive.

Buying an Intel "i" series CPU means an X58 chipset mainboard, and they are still expensive. I did see a listing for one around 260,000 I think, but if you are going to go that direction, why take the cheap ride? Count on about 300 ~ 350,000 for that. (P55 is out...not sure about pricing)

Quad core is fine and will be for a time to come. "i" series spanks any quad core because it is a true quad core. Remember, the Core2Quad means 2 dual cores lashed together.

Shoot, I ordered this beast for my computer:

That's what I put into my PC a few months ago when I built it. These biotches are monsters.

True. OP, if you get the I7, you'll be limited in terms of motherboards. Those that can house the i7 are big money. Stick with the quad core because of your price range and you'll be fine.

You can get a 6GB set of G-Skill DDR3 for around 170,000. Not top quality, but it'll work.

There are two routes to go at the moment for PC building.
The future is i7. They absolutely blow any other CPU away. Quad core included. If you want to be in the future, and want the best performance, then buy i7.

Or, for about 40% less money, you can build a killer rig based on 2-year old C2D tech.

Both will satisfy your gaming needs. But only one will satisfy those needs past 2010.

How much do you reckon I could build a rig on the old c2d tech for? the i7 sounds tempting, but I kind of have a 2 generation rule, and it's too expensive, because I'll probably end up selling it in a year if I move from Korea. I usually like to wait until its a couple of gen ahead of what I last had (went from a single core athlon xp to core 2 duo before, that way you really feel the benefit of the upgrade!)

At the mo I've got a Dell xps m1530 which is great for most games, but really struggles on the beasties like Arma II. I always seem to prefer those beastie sort of games too!

A great gaming rig can be built with a C2D E8400, an ATI HD4890, and a P35 or P45 mother board.....good power supply.....4GB RAM.....2TB of hard drives.......

.....I guess 1,000,000 total.

You can overclock that E8400 (only 205,000) very easily to 3.6ghz which is plenty fast for any game out there. Thereby negating the need for i7 or Quad-core.
