I'm a couple months away from completion. The school and I have a really good relationship. I want to stay, but not for another year. Is renewing for 6 months more complicated? is it rare?
If the school's up for it, what type of paper work do I need to provide? do i need to do another record check? |

Zero.
I had a friend in the same situation as you and it is 1 year or nothing.
They wouldn't budge so basically she signed the year contract and then 5 months in told them she was leaving in a month. |

Err, not zero. They tell everyone that it's zero in every district, GEPIK, EPIK, etc. Considering that I know three people who just signed on for another 6 months and are now staying until February, it's not zero.
When the time comes for you to decide whether you're renewing or not, go to your district coordinator directly and ask them for a 6 month extension on your contract. They might say no, but it's not impossible. As far as I know, you won't need any extra paperwork but you and your school will have to extend your visa. |

I'm with an offshoot of EPIK (EPIS) and I got a six month extension until February. It wasn't really a problem at all. We had to do some negotiating and they had to change a few clauses in the standard contract, but it wasn't much of a problem. |

It really depends on the school whether they'd go for a 6 month extension or not. Maybe you could work something out where you resign until the end of a semester.
Safest bet would be to renew for a year and then have something come up that you have to leave for. I'd only recommend this if the time you'd be leaving is a convenient time to hire a new GEPIK teacher, though, like the end of the semester or school year. I wouldn't want to leave a school mid semester without a teacher - it's not fair to them, even less fair if they're a good school.
http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/main_en.pt has information about visa renewal and transfer. You shouldn't need another criminal check if your visa doesn't expire. |
